Fender 5B6 with 6V6 / Little Walter build

Post by oldmacman »

Just finished up a Fender 5B6 point to point build in the style of Little Walter or Tino Zottola. I followed the layout at https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=26177 with a few changes. OT is from a Filmosound 385 projector, and PT is a ClassicTone Vox AC-15 replacement that I got on Amp Garage a while back. Rectifier is a GE 6AX5, which runs on 6V and is approximately equivalent to a 5Y3 otherwise. Sounds great, especially with my Tele -- a lot more chime than I had expected, and some nice crunch when it's turned up.

Changes I made:
* 20 uF first filter cap rather than 33 uF, to match the rectifier. Also, a 470K bleeder resistor across the first filter cap, just for safety.
* Cleaner grounding scheme. The first filter cap ground goes to the PT secondary center tap. The second filter cap ground goes to the power tube cathode resistor ground. The third filter cap ground goes to the the PI terminal strip ground.
* Added 1K screen resistors, just to be easier on the tubes.
* Added grid resistors on V1 -- these should provide a bit of protection against RF pickup without rolling off the highs.
* Cleaner placement of PI coupling caps -- I could do this since I used Mallory 150 style caps rather than the huge Auricaps that Little Walter uses.

I see the 6AX5 is rated for 450 max Volts h-k. What is the high VAC winding putting out (out of curiosity)?

600 VCT (see http://www.classictone.net/40-18079.pdf), so we squeak in just under the rating.
