Quilter Amps?

Post by Mark »

This is late news I'm sure as class D amps have been with us for a while. I suppose the thing that got me thinking was the small size and the similar made to classic amps. I wonder if this sort of thing given the Kemper is here and it gets such a good rap.

Has anyone tried one and how do they perform. My brother has a class D bass which allegedly has more watts than his SVT but there is not doubt the SVT is the louder amp.

Thanks for your time.

I've not tried one, but the folks on reddit have repeatedly given quilter rave reviews.

Power and heat were my initial concerns, there is no doubt this is a throw away amp. No one will be fixing this thing. I'm under the impression a class D amp operates in a similar fashion to a switch mode power supply in that there has to be an even duty cycle for the amp not to blow up. Give this thing it so small and there has to be some heat dissipation, I wonder what the expected life of these things is?

From the reviews I can't work out what amp the Quilter's are suppose to sound like.
Yours Sincerely

Quilter amps are very popular with the Pedal Steel Guitar crowd.

Hi Mark,

FWIW, a local friend (and pedal steel, violin, and guitar player) had a 10, 12, and 15" Quilter. The 10" failed and went back. Honestly, they sound good, but IMHO, not tube amp good. Plug a Timmy pedal into the Quilter 15" and that's funnish. Sounded kind of like a Plexi. But generally, to me, they weren't anything I would call an inspired tone. My friend is back to his Tweed Deluxe and 18W amps. The pros are they are cheap, powerful, light weight, very portable, and a clean palette with some vintage-inspired EQs and other swiss army knife amp features (line out, silent mode, reverb, etc). It's a tool for a job.

One of my crustomers got a Quilter and he's head over heels happy about it. 200 watts, woo-hoo! He brought it over to demonstrate it and, well, I was a lot less than impressed. For 200W it didn't get very loud. And the tone was, meh.... As with any amp, choice of speakers is important. Dull inefficient speakers, usually cheapo OEM units, probably contributed to my low opinion. Compared to his other amp, a juiced up Vibrolux with JBL K110's, all the Quilter had going for it was light weight. That Vibrolux can break glass at 100 yards.
