Brother P-touch beats Dymo into the dirt

Post by xtian »

I've been using Dymo labels for a while, but it's not great tech for labeling tube amps, because they're thermally active, and the heat from the chassis can darken the labels.

I just got a Brother P-touch (PT-D210, about $40 on amazon). This is superior tech. The tape is in three elements: a colored or clear background layer, an "ink" layer that gets fused to the background, and a clear top coat layer that laminates and protects.

I subjected the print out to my heat gun, and it survived a 60 second blast with only mild deformation, and no discoloration.

Lots of tape widths and colors available, and third-party tape is inexpensive.

The old thing is better though.. print by deformation and stick like a face hugger..
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I picked up the same P-touch recently too. I went nuts labelling drawers!

If you get one of the models that plugs into the USB port on a computer, you’re not limited to just a few fonts and design elements.

Thanks xtian & drew. It's about time I upped my game in labeling. Had a Brother from maybe 20 years ago, it was kind of cheapo and ate batteries like godzilla.

drew can you suggest a model specifically, that accepts the computer interface?

I've been using this Dymo for about 1.5 years and really like it...

I also have a Dymo similar to the Brother shown above but I haven't used it since I got the Plug N Play. It was very limited in fonts but works great in the field.

I think this is what I have:

I would check for newer models. Plus, get the AC adapter or run it off a pedal power supply or something; otherwise it’s very easy to run the batteries down.

This was done with black-on-clear Brother tape. The "Robin Trower" part was a graphic image snipped from the Bridge of Sighs album cover; the rest I think was some font I had on my computer.
