Pages Marshall mods?

Post by RockinRocket »

A friend is interested in a Page modded Marshall, Is this simply a Super lead with Kt88? What mods were done for the Kt88s?
Id be looking at doing a 50w build. Any adjustments needed to capture that tone at 50??
Thanks

Transformers all swapped. Around 180w RMS from 88s. Amp volume on around 4. The volume is the sustain.

You won't be happy. :)

It's all but a Major. 50s tickle. 100s tickle a lot. 200s tickles next week.

KT88's need lower screen voltage, otherwise; they won't last long.

IF you want a Jimmy Page tone …………………….. I've not heard anything that sounds as close to his tone then Leon C's Supro 1688TN amp, IMO.

This has remained my favorite YouTube amp tone for years now.

Thanks fellas,

The goal was to capture this in a lower wattage package. Power transformer would be putting 430 on the plates with EL34 but was going to substitute KT88s. I figured a few resistors in the bias circuit would probably need changed.

430v to much for a KT88 Mark?

I was thinking the transformers were not moded? But still need to do more research.

Oh hell no. KT88 can literally take almost twice that with proper bias. KT88s can take more voltage than average test gear. :)

I would go for about 490-510 and bias them properly hot, but not ridiculously hot. Nominally hot.. like a supermodel with a chat habit.

"Shhhh.. beautiful.... "...

A pair of KT88s can eat a cabinet full of lil greenbacks. :)

I suggest shared cathode setup with stock tone controls sloped 56k/556p (560 is fine too) with early version pres (5k pot .1 cap) I would use .1u in coupling of output as well. Most every other coupler is .022u. Stock PI values. You might want to consider a switch for bright cap with a couple or more selections. Umm.. I would like 250p or 500p, 1kp and 5kp. Some/More/WTF.

It will scare you a little when you play it the first time. haha

reeltard, yes KT88's can take a lot of plate voltage but what screen voltage do you suggest?

A lot of drop. 1k screens could work as well but 2k2 would be more interesting with such a strident and on demand attack. 88s can feel like you are jumping onto concrete. Them feels fast! I can't find my link where we decided around 100v drop from plates to screen. Might have been 375 on a 500v plates.. I bet Martin has a neat picture of a split supply..where is the internet going?

Someone frisk Facebook. Good luck.

Filtering would be where I would have all my fun tweaking that amp. Plexi has more sponge.. maybe the PI would be the one to experiment with most..

That is also why I would basically look at the amp like a JTM50 with silicon rectifier when choosing coupling at the end. I'd let the ass hang out and control flub with bright cap selection vs volume.

I don't like UL Generally but separate screen supply is an option. There are some weird ways to get all that done, but I sort of like sticking with simple. If you get the ratios wrong the first time you are hundreds of dollars away from something better. wha wha

Caveat: I have been using the old ones, but I hear the EH tubes can take nearly the beating.

Hey, did all the old forum come along with us? There is some things I can't find with very specific terms even using a whole Google.

as far as I know, yes, there's still some posts with image links that are weird, but they can be edited to work (the images are there but the new image link format doesn't read the old one)

Thank you, Phil..

I might be losing it. I know we had a conversation in 2013 likely around late-middle of September about amps I played at the Nashville show and the word Astrodust is in that conversation more than once but I can't find the topic. It was about using KTs for power and making them sing instead of punch and blow up. lol

I did find my cattifier circuit. It's still funny.

My Google fu is better than yours I guess:

https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 7&start=45

I did this in google:

site:ampgarage.com Astrodust

and it found it. Google doesn't always do a great job just generically saying

ampgarage astrodust

but if you tell it "search only in indexed data for this site" with the site:sitename like above, it finds things a lot better. Also the phpbb search features sucks ass.
