Marshall cab experts what year is my cab?

Post by M Fowler »

Saw this 412 cab at my local guitar store and asked if it was for sale and yes it was on consignment so I got it.

I'm not a Marshall expert so wondering if you could ball park the year for me?

Ok, so the lower left front badge says JCM 800 and it appears to be 84-85 ish but up to the end of umm.. I dunno it looks exactly like the features on my quad of late 80s 800s..

We know it's full of 75s and previous cabs with 800 series have 60s.. it's post 82 because the features are slightly different..

The tag.. I see the ghost of the serial. Brit domestics had tags.. but I have rarely seen that tag on an export.. different tag.

If the speakers are original to the cab you can date it that way by the date codes. In general those 300w plate cabs didn't show up until the G12T-75 speakers were being used, which would put it around 83 at the earliest.

Be advised that's not a hard/fast rule. I've seen G12-65 speakers in cabs marked 300w, so the best way is to take off the back panel and look for the date codes on the speakers.

The 1985 cabs I have seen were 8 ohms without the label in the lower left corner. This cab seems a little newer

hah! You aren't that lucky! My images are given to heads of state and graduates of lesser degrees and once my image was stolen and replaced with a copy!

Roe don't you have a history of Marshall data sheet somewhere?

Thanks Martin that helps.

I think Roe did a complete listing of amplifiers.

If I find some Marshall JCM800 2204 or 2203 heads I want the earlier version with pots off the board and the better boards in my opinion.
Some of the JCM800 2204's I've worked on had pots mounted to board and the boards were not as good as the previous generation in my opinion, which isn't much. :D

I can't understand why it took them 7 years to simplify the master volume models into the 800 series. The early MV amps were.. umm.. not the greatest sound on Earth. :)

After messing around with stock 4-holers and realizing all it took was moving a wire to the input resistor on the other channel to make hellfire.. it seems like disco was very unkind to Marshall. lol

I love hijacking threads. Has anyone else made grounded plugs into gain keys? You can put caps, resistors, or diodes in there. The original plugins.
