Hot Rodded Marshall based build (pic heavy)

Post by dbeasley »

Hey everyone. I just finished my latest build, and damn it was a doozy.

This amp is based on the fairly new Friedman BE50 deluxe..which is in essence a hot Rodded Marshall circuit with lots of extra features and a great FX loop.

I heard one demo of this amp from Sweetwater and said dammit...I want one. So I built it. A schematic was pretty quickly extrapolated over at SLO clone forums and using that, I created an eyelet board layout (original one is a PCB) as more of a personal challenge than an order of convenience.

I did make some changes from the original design. I used an off the shelf high current 12 regulator board I populated and bolted inside (can handle 7A of current, which is waaaay overkill). I also omitted a few features that I felt I would never use - this amp has enough knobs and switches anyway so whatever. I also ran 12V DC heaters for all preamp tubes.

Power transformer is a 100W classic tone universal. I liked that it allowed multiple HT configs that I can play with and extra windings for powering the relay boards. Plus it will never sag, lol. Which I like.

OT is a NOS OEI output transformer.

After a 24 HR burn in I gave it a nice thorough demo with several different guitars and amp cabs and It sounds awesome. Does all the hot Rodded Marshall tones in spades, plus an actual honest to God great sounding clean channel.

Quick question: will you get a few pennies per view for kellogg's product placement?

Haha! I have a 1 year old that likes to watch me work. I have to occasionally placate him with corn flakes. They are his favorite :)

Awesome looking amp! She should sound amazing!
I have just ordered parts to build a Hot Rodded Marshal #39.
How are you holding up the chassis in the cabinet ?
I will use these for my chassis.

Also I was interested in where you got the effects loop from.

Thanks

I'll use cage nuts. I've had good luck with those.

Regarding the FX loop, I used a Metroamp zero loss FX loop. I highly recommend them. Easy to integrate, and it comes with a loop bypass toggle and wiring - you can set it to work with -10 or +4 level effects (pedal or rack effects) and is very transparent. Flipping in and out of bypass I can hear no difference

Your work just gets better looking all the time. It's amazingly nice!

Very nice... Where did you source the wood grain board? Look well laid out.
