Two new/old sets of tubes

Post by skyboltone »

I won an Ebay auction recently for a pair of Hammond organ AO-43 amplifiers working when removed yada yada.

Anyway, tubes were included and I got three 12AX7s branded Hammond made in Great Britain with the obvious ridge on the top where the glass was melted together after evacuation. These are Mullards. The other 12AX7 is a MIJ Magnavox also with the ridge. The Mullard japanese facility.

There are two sets of 6BQ5/EL-84s marked Hammond. One set is marked made in Germany. Telefunken? The other set is marked Hammond marked made blank blank land. This could be England (not Great Britan) or more likely Holland meaning probably Amperex.

There are 2 12BH7 marked Hammond made in Holland. IIRC these are a form of 12AU7.

All tubes test very well indeed.

I have yet to investigate the iron but I suspect it will be similar to the AO-35. I.E. PT 300-0-300 and 8800-8 ohm on the OT.

An exceptional deal at $122 bucks.

Yeah, my cousin scouts out old Hammond gear at thrift stores and garage sales.
He's told me that on more than one occasion he buys an organ or other tube driven piece then strips it right there at the store!
Then he tells them they can keep the rest....
Right or wrong he has gotten some nice tubes and xformers.

Any codes on the tubes?

I would bet the the ones from Holland are Philips Herleen. I have a few of these myself.

I'll let you know. I got some Hammond marked Amperex out of an AO-35 I stumbled across, but the Amperex is etched across the tube base.

I'm still tweaking the two hole Liverpool. The son of a biscuit has too much noise/hum (mostly noise) for my taste, but only when the volume pot is turned mostly down. Otherwise it's the most harmonicx rich amp I have ever heard. Somebody mentioned throwing in a .022 across R7. When I tried it I didn't get much help. There is just no reason for it from a layout standpoint. I even stuck in a 22k grid stopper at V1a. No help. Maybe my generator. I'm gonna bring it home and scare heck out of a bunch of boaters tomorrow.

Anyway, I'll get the codes off the tubes tomorrow maybe.
