Project idea needed

Post by tomrasdf »

My family had confided in me that they are going to fund a new build for me as a Christmas gift. Dumbles and wrecks are nice, but I'm looking to build something different this time. Wreck's to loud, I play mostly in worship bands, so I need good sound at moderate volumes. I'm thinking something simple (one channel) and SLO/plexi sounding. Anyone have any suggestions? The doner is a bassman chassis.

A 'Wreck is too loud? Build a Derailment. It's a relatively simple amp, low power, crank it up and get "heavenly" tone. Ken earned his wings last year so it's appropriate for church.

"Bassman" chassis? Which one?

50 watt silverface. Trashed. Iron in tact. It was the victem of someone elses previous mod attempt. 4-holer preamp. I'll check out the derailment. Any clips posted?

Are you aware that a D-Lite or Dumble clone has all of the "Sound" in the pre amp? The master controls the volume. A Bassman would be perfect for a donar amp. Do a search for Bassman. Several have built them.

One step ahead of you. I've currently got a 50 watt non-hrm BM 100k/1.5k in another bassman chassis and I LOVE it. It just doesn't do the crunch thing though. I'm looking for something that shreds a bit more.
Anyone here from the SLO clone forum? How do they sound if you leave out the fx loop? Maybe a 50 watt lead channel only SLO?

How about a 6L6 Plexi with an isolation box? That'll crunch!

You basically won't have any real "clean" settings with the lead channel only. Have you considered a variant on the Marshall 2203/4 circuit? That one cleans up nicely, but still has a good bit of drive. Not as heavy and saturated as a SLO, so if that's what you're going for, you'd have to add pedals to get there.

I built a "SLOVox" two-channel amp in a gutted Carvin Nomad chassis that turned out pretty good.

A couple of switches and appropriate power tube socket wiring and you can have a Wreck and Plexi all in one package that runs 6V6, 6L6, KT66, KT77, EL34, etc. You could do an SE version as well with parallel power tubes with the ability to shut one off. Or a Vajra style SE/PP control (like half a PPIMV).

Alright, great ideas going here (thanks much), but I'm going to do a complete 180 here. The bassman chassis will have to wait its turn.

I'm going to use the amp funds to right a terrible wrong I committed a short while back. The first amp I build on thid forum was a 18 watt liverpool that I lumped together in an old tiger Gregory combo. It turned out to be an abomination (look for yourselves... https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=). Sounded terrible and it probably constitutes a fire hazard. It's a very cool and unique cabinet, and it deserves better.

Your Liverpool build doesn't look that bad. I've seen much worse.

What was wrong with it's tone?

Thanks for the kind words. It's very harsh sounding, even with no bright switch. I can't make it sound anything but thin, brittle, and strident.

Anyone have experience with preamps that sound good through a duet of el84s? I'm looking for a good blues/jazz amp.

I'm thinking of doing one channel as an AC30 pre, and the other as either dr.z CG or Marshall 18watt. The extra triode will be used for a power tube bias type trem.

I'll play around with it a bit and see what looks good on paper. I'll definitely be back with a schematic to try and get a proofread as this'll be the first amp I've ever "designed" and not copied of a pre-approved schematic.

Yeouch!

Can I drive over to batavia and smack you for the mess?

I'm just messin' with you man. I probably couldn't have done much better.

If you want to play with gear, I'm just down Butterfield from you. I could use another ear on my Express build.

You might check out this thread for a good tool to troubleshoot that Liverpool: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=3995

Try one of these...

Tom,

You might think about one of these... it's a 5 watt push pull triode output... It's worship band proven and I'm thinkin' it's the best sounding low watt amp I've ever heard... I gig mine every Sunday and it's small venue friendly.

Schematic, advice, more pictures, all the specifications, anything you need is yours for the asking...

One cool technology piece is the interstage transformer for a phase inverter... this is something that works really well and it's cheap and simple.

I've been thinking about making a kit for them... I've got a vendor for chassis' and faceplates...

here's my original thread on them... https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=
