'61 Empire 208 Turntable

Post by Blackburn »

Hey all! It's been a long while since I've been on. Been busy, but still bending wire on occasion. Doing more repairs than building lately, which keeps me happy enough. 8)

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any Empire lovers/owners here and want to get a thread rolling. I recently got lucky and managed to get my hands on a stock '61 208. This thing is USA in a TT. A friend (who owns a '63 398) and mentor to me in all things electronic and TT nut thinks the needle may be original too! Sounds great, but I'm planning on getting a replacement needle to have and compare. The cartridge is an Empire 108.

Here it is...

Oh man! Back in the day, they didn't skimp. Look at that piece of furniture they used as a base!

I think I remember this thing being close to 20 lbs. I wonder what the platter alone is. With the belt off, it'll spin for minutes with just one light spin. They certainly didn't skimp! Empires from this era are the best American made TTs, IMO. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, right? About as simple as they come and all manual.

I was a B&O nut before I got this thing and those are very nice in their own right. Still have four of those. Really sleek TTs. Fully automatic, so they come in handy when you fall asleep listening to a record.
