Robben Ford concert
I saw Robben a few weeks ago. Free show called Guitar Town at Copper Mountain Resort. Matt Schofield, Sonny Landreth, John Jorgenson and Steve Vai. Good stuff. Also saw Robben the night before at the Crestone Music Fest. Also a good show.
Robben used the tan Dumble with a Super Reverb for effects. He only used the clean channel on the Dumble. His sound was very clean for both shows with barely any break up at all. I saw him step on a boost/OD box of some sort. I didn't see what it was, but it only gave a slight boost with almost no added harmonic complexity. I didn't hear any, what I consider, classic Dumble tones. He could have just as easily played through a Fender the entire show(s) and I doubt I would have heard any difference. Tight, punchy, and chimey all the way.

I guess you don't get Dumble overdrive for free.

I was hoping to hear the D OD the whole time. Robben, if you're listening, get rid of that stomp box.Charlie Wilson wrote:I guess you don't get Dumble overdrive for free.

Yup, you don't get it if you pay either.

Re: Robben Ford concert
What current artists are using Dumble Amps???
Robben need to get dirty every once and a while....

Re: Robben Ford concert
The cost for D OD is having to cart around rack gear..Is for me
hate it..Sometimes I would rather throw a pedal on the floor and leave that sh@*t sit right there..

I'm not in a band so it's not an issue with me but I could see how it would be a pain in the butt.
Re: Robben Ford concert
As the years go by, that is more and more of an issue for me as well.

Re: Robben Ford concert
OK at the risk of getting pounced on I am going to say....waaah. Look I get it Tony and Gil probably have full sized Dumbleators set just the way they like and a processor that sounds just the way they want and so you have to carry a three space or so rack. However, if the loop is there just so you can get some reverb or delay there are smaller less heavy ways of doing it. A loop built into the amp, a product like Andy Fuch's Verbrator, or build a small Dumbleator like Martin did and then you can use some cabling if the amp needs it. I have a friend who is a great guitar player(really great) and he tells me that if he can't carry his entire rig and guitars in one trip he has too much stuff. The problem is his rig sounds like it only took one trip. I watch(usually help) my bass player carry his huge cabinet in and then the head or the drummer having to make ten trips to bring his set in and I usually feel like I have it easy. Now the thing with Robben. He has people to carry his gear for him. I remember seeing him in the early 80's and he walked on stage with a red Strat with some kind of white lace sensor looking pickups and he had his 335 sitting on the stand. He played clean the whole night. Me and my GIT buddies couldn't believe it. Now Robben sounds great however he plays but he has got to know that there are a bunch of people in the audience that want to hear his classic sound. OK let the pouncing begin.

Right on Charlie.
My little rig with Dlator and some rack stuff is nothing compared to the B3 and Leslie. We all help and it's worth it. OTOH, I don't play EVERY night. If I did, my story might be different.

I don't mind carrying and setting up my amp with a built in loop and reverb. The one I built with an outboard D'lator stays at home, though. I've got enough stuff to cart and plug in helping out with the PA.
For me, the extra cabling and connecting is the biggest issue as there's a lot more chances for things to break.

CharlieOK at the risk of getting pounced on I am going to say....waaah.
I used to say/think the same thing about others that complained about hauling bigger rigs around..(hell I used to own an amp company)All I can say is I don't know whats happend to me..
After years and years you just get tired of hauling it all around when I have other smaller rigs that sound great, even with pedals..
As far as Robbens excuse you just have to ask him?..There could be other reasons why he doesn't haul his around for every show..Logistics/cost,on going problems, room sizes,or maybe he is just evolving as artists sometimes do?
As far as Drummers and Keyboard players go..I am glad I am not them..Then again I could have been a horn player or better yet a singer...Ahhh scratch the singer...
