Now that stirs up memories I haven't visited in a long time. My friend had it. In fact, he had the best hi-fii stereo of anyone I knew. I believe his father was an electronics enthusiast and they built a kit together...Heath, Dynaco, I don't remember, but it was A+ level stuff. We used to lock ourselves in his room, prepare ourselves appropriately, and crank it up. If 6 was 9, I don't mind...

His father's rig in the den was even better. It was a Fisher. Really high end stuff. The amp was exposed, tubes and all. I remember him telling me not to fool with the bias screw, LOL!

Remember, it was uncommon to encounter this type of gear back in the '60's. I knew it was special stuff, but only now can I really appreciate what it was.

My first disc wasn't an album, though both sides had a medley of songs. It was a 10" 78 RPM disc of The Modernaires singing highlights from the movie "The Glenn Miller Story".

The date would have been about 1959 when a neighbour gave me a wind-up phonograph, very similar to this one, so I headed to the local hardware store, which also used to sell a small range of records. They were clearing out 78 RPM shellac disks in favour of the new vinyl singles and lp's, so I purchased that first disk for one shilling. Once I was confident the phonograph worked, I returned to purchase a second disc - Kay Starr singing "Wheel of Fortune".

We always had a lot of music around the house but the first album I purchased was Springsteen's Born to Run.
Through high school and college I amassed a pretty sizeable collection of 60's thru 80's vinyl.
After moving around several times for my company i got tired of moving it around and I had purchased a CD player. I left the whole collection and a Pioneer turntable at some girlfriend's apt storage locker and have no idea of what became of it....kicking self in butt.

My first album was Les Paul - Now! in '67 or '68 - I was in 6th grade I think - we had just gotten the awesome new Close 'N Play plastic phonograph with the needle built into the lid, and it's the only album we had for about a year.

edit: I asked my little brother, whose memory works much better than mine, and he said the phonograph was another cheap model called a Tote-a Tune, which was also red.

It played at 16 speed, which was great for learning songs because it was an octave lower and slowed down to half speed when using a 33 lp. The fist song I learned was the melody to How High the Moon, using my flutophone (simplified kids' plastic clarinet).

Ok...I am comfortable enough with myself to admit that my first album was KISS: Hotter than Hell in 1974. I was 13 years old growing up in rural NH and was just becoming "aware" electric rock music (as my dad called it!).

Allman Bros, Aerosmith, BOC, BTO, CCR, Rush, Stones, Zep,..etc..etc.. were only minutes behind.

Get a grip - Aerosmith. It was an audio cassette.
I was 14 and that cover interested me.

On LP it was Sandy Nelson's Let There Be Drums in 1962.

First CD was Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus sometime in the mid '80s.

When I was 11 I joined the Columbia record club. I got 12 albums for a penny, and every month the sent me an album I didn't want and charged me $14.97! That didnt last. The first ones I got were the Stones (I got my satisfaction), Johnny Cash, Live from Folsom prison, Herb Alert and Brazil66, Whipped cream and other delights ( because the cover had a naked woman covered in whipped cream. I was 11), The Ventures, The Byrds, The Turtles, The Association, and several others just to make 12.
The first CD was Genesis, Trick of the Tail. Quieter with no needle noise, but a very harsh, strident pressing compared to the album. The first CD'S had over emphasized high end as many engineers sought to make the most of the medium. The remastered version is much better.
I liked going to my cousins house because they had a big console with tube amp innards and big speakers on the ends. The built in turntable was a record carver, I think the needle tip was broken and they taped a silver dollar on the tonearm! Tracking force mus have been 40 grams. But he had Beatles Rubber Soul and the first 2 Led Zeppelin albums and I wore those out.
