Smell-o-vision (or at least smell-a-movie) was invented and tried long ago - late 60s or 70s IIRC.

It was a disaster. It's easy enough to release smells at certain points in the film, and disperse them so you can smell them. It turned out to be impossible to REMOVE the smells once they'd served their cinematic purpose. The already-used smells just hung around.
