RegCure Pro software
I ran across this software and ran a scan with it. It purports to show registry problems everywhere on my machine except no malware (because I have Malwarebytes).
Can anyone advise me if it is safe to use? It wants to delete a lot of "junk files", for one thing. What the softare thinks is junk might be all my treasured TAG files, for example, so I'm kinda leery.
It's free but you can't use it unril you register it with your e-mail address, so I'm leery of that too, probably want to sell me something.

I don't think that it's wise to use something you know nothing about. If you want to clean your registry, try ccleaner. Get it from the publisher, Piriform and not from some 3rd party site where they load a Trojan as a bonus. In general, ccleaner is harmless. It will remove unreferenced statements in your registry -- orphans that point to nothing. But it isn't necessary.
If you have performance issues with your computer, look to see what is running that isn't needed. Press the Start button and type "services.msc" in the dialog box and change what starts automatically. You can Google just about any program that appears in Services and you'll get a decent rundown on what it does and how essential it is.
Meanwhile, Google is your friend:

Why are you wanting to run a tool like this? The advice that has been given is good. On the other hand, I have never experienced a performance improvement from CCleaner or any other tool in that category, although some have reported good results. If your machine is slow due to registry problems a tool isn't going to fix it IME. The best 'fix' is to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS. It always works.

Re: RegCure Pro software
Well I ran ccleaner. Didn't seem to do anything except delete quick pickup of my bank connection memory, so I had to re-do that.
I also uninstalled RegCure Pro and sent its installer to the Recycle Bin and emptied it.

If this is the 10 year old computer you mentioned, there is no amount of cleanup I can think of to make it run much faster. Wipe it and install unix. That will probably be really snappy. Unfortunately, unix isn't for everyone and drivers for your peripherals could be hard to find.

CCleaner Woes
After I ran CCleaner I am having some real problems.
It has screwed up my wife's Amazon Kindle e-mail subscription so she can't get their daily list of new books to buy. The subscription is activated in her account at Amazon but she is still not getting the daily e-mails.
Amazon has not been able to fix it so far, several days now. They said unsubscribe then resubscribe, did that, no effect.
Is there any way to reset CCleaner to default back to my settings before I ran it?
It also screwed up my online bank access but I managed to fix that myself. Seems like it just wiped the cookies.
But this Amazon thing has me stumped.

You need to be able to "view all files". Google that and your operating system. Set 'view all files'
Login to Amazon, unsibscribe. Logout. Close your browser.
Open the folder similar to:
C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
Select all files and delete.
Open previous email from Amazon
Follow the link at the bottom to change your email and market prefs.

So after running CCleaner, daily emails from Amazon are not arriving?
I don't have a Kindle, so I'm not sure how the delivery mechanism works for it.
Typically, the worst that CCleaner does is remove cookies that store some personal information. So you have to re-login like you experienced.
If you ran the "registry" part of the clean, maybe this is where things went awry. It does create a backup of your registry changes and they are stored in your XP "My Documents" folder. They usually are named cc_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.reg (year year month month day day, etc).
If you ran the registry cleaner portion and suspect this caused an issue. Go to your My Documents folder and double click on the registry backup to import the content that was removed from your registry.
HTH!

Re: RegCure Pro software
Thanx again brentm. I have just been investigating Ccleaner problems on the net and yes I did do a registry clean.
I did find a posting by piriform about resetting the registry backup like you said from My Docs and I just did it. Looks like it went thru OK
So hopefully there will be an e-mail from Amazon Kindle tomorrow morning, I hope so, I am catching heavy s**t over this!
