Anyone care to see the DC30 I built for a client?

Post by dartanion »

Hey guys,

Here's a few shots of a DC30 I just finished up for a client. This build makes a Twin Reverb look easy.

At least you didn't have to build it PTP!

I saw a pic of a real one and it looked like someone just dumped a bunch of parts in the chassis!

Yeah, I've seen a real one too. I don't think it would be any less time consuming though as there are wires running everywhere in this chassis.

Yes it is one of Nik's kits, although it has a few of my tweaks inserted.

It took a lot longer than I imagined. But it did fire up perfectly first try. :D

I usually do the cabs myself, but had Reason Amplification do this cab. It was part of the big group buy deal I did.

She's a beaut' :!: :D Did you have to tweak the lead dress much :?: There's a lot of wire there, but it sure is a clean build. I'll bet she sounds as good as she looks 8)

Hey, what do you think of Reason cabs? I've used Swanson before and was very pleased, but I've been curious about Reason stuff as well...

Anthony and his folks at Reason / Rhyme do a nice job. These cabs are especially nice. I had them do up a couple for my Wrecks which turned out really cool. I haven't finished them completely and want to show them off together, so no pics yet. Although there is a peak at it in a couple of posts I did in the past few months.

The DC30 12AX7 side is pretty smooth and not overly aggressive. It has a really nice clean tone and Vox like Chimey distortion. The EF86 side with the 6way tone switch was loud and agressive. Great midrange punch and early break up. Using the master volume with the EF86 side was interesting. Wide range of distortion tones available there. This is a great all around amp with a lot of features: 2 channel FX loop, speaker polarity switch, impedance selector switch, Pull pot MV, 6way Tone switch on EF86, Cut Control, Half Power Switch, Hi/Low inputs on both channels, etc. The power section sounds pretty meaty and is not super bright.

The Liverpool is totally different beast. Simple single channel high gain preamp into cathode biased 4x EL84. Very aggressive with tons of overdrive on tap. Cleans up well with rolling the guitar volume back, but is voiced fairly bright. This brightness makes it cut through with a full band really well and doesn't sit in the mix like a dental drill.

The DC30 was a no trouble build whereas the Liverpool is still not quite right. It's kind of frustrating, but I'll get it nailed down when I get time.
