Rocksmith 2014--I'm loving it

Post by davidjon_99 »

Anyone else playing Rocksmith 2014? I don't usually play video games, but this one actually uses your real guitar and you play along with real songs (Aerosmith, Rush, Rolling Stones, Boston, BB King, Albert King...). For a beginner like me it really makes learning very enjoyable.

I was introduced to it by my son. He's 22, has Asperger (high functioning) and lives in his own apartment close by. To make sure he's doing well I meet with him on a very regular basis. He started playing the original Rocksmith but it seemed kind of clunky to me. Then he started playing the new version (2014) and I really liked it. Now we try to make it a weekly thing (gig) for him to come over and we play together. I bought a bass and we'll switch off playing bass, lead or rhythm. I'm really enjoying playing bass also.

I tried learning guitar about 15 years ago, but I wasn't having fun and eventually lost interest after about a year. I've learned and progressed more in the 6 months that I've played Rocksmith than I ever would have imagined those may years ago. I still suck, but I suck less than I did 6 months ago. :)

That's awesome you have something like that to do with your son, sounds like a blast! Extra bonus dad points for Fathers day...

I never got into playing video games, I could never get the hang of it, except grand tourismo, got blisters on my thumbs on that one. I got over the hump on guitar playing when I was young before video games were really a thing.

I did play guitar hero at my nephews one time and got my butt kicked by a 10 year old asian girl! I was thinking O.K. I know this song and I've been playing guitar for 30 years, something doesn't translate here.

Thanks ER. It has brought the two of us closer together.

My kids (all 4) used to play Guitar Hero and Rockband and I never had any interest in playing it or pretty much any other video game. I just never got into it.

Everybody learns guitar at a different pace. The best way to pick up the pace is to schedule a gig...soon  If that reality doesn't work, nothing will IMO.

I see several issues with Rocksmith and similar things, including tabs. They don't do much to develop your ear or provide any theory which I think is necessary to improvise, solo, understand the instrument or whatever. Kind of like building an amp from a layout. It's cool and it can work on a limited basis, but leaves a lot to be desired.

All that being said, I am happy that you and your son are learning and having fun. That's awesome. Enjoy
