I've been around since the beginning and this is one of my favorite places to stop by and hang out. The TW info gleaned here has assisted me in building an Express on my second build and the Dumble info is top notch! I'm a staunch proponent of keeping this place as friendly as possible so that Omar doesn't have to worry about fights and arguments and we can all benefit from the shared information.

While I consider you one of the more knowledgable people here at this forum, and I appreciate all your help with my K***t clone, I must respectfully disagree with your suggestion of kicking out anyone who doesn't contribute. Even though I have been tinkering with amp building for about four years now, I still consider myself a newbe and do not feel I have the credentials to offer much to anyone. However, I do visit and read ALOT! Every time I visit I learn something. And, I purposely do a search for all posts where you are the author every single time I visit because that is how much I respect your knowledge. So please don't take this as a flame. I hope there could be a better method of eliminating trouble makers. I don't agree with every rule Omar has, specifically about posting schematics of "current production" amps because I feel all current amps are just copies of previously proven circuits with a few tweaks and mods here and there and basically exist because these companies have done exactly the same thing. But this is Omar's forum and I will continue to respect his rules. But one of the reasons I don't post very often is because of my experiences at other forums. If you ask a question that is characteristic of a newbe, there always seems to be some veteran guru who wants to take shots at a newbe or tell them how big of a dumb ass they are. I experienced this over at the Hoffman Amps forum. I still buy parts from Doug, but I don't even visit his forum. So I ask that there be a little more thought and understanding to why not everyone will readily post. I'll get off my soap box now.

I think Allyn is talking about participating (vs. contributing). In other words, someone who asks questions or even says "thank you" is participating. You have posted at least 8 times now, so you haven't been silent.

Usually people run into the same problems when building the same style of amps. If you have no answers to give it is not a big deal. If you ask the questions, people will try to answer them. You and others will learn from this and you'll be contributing a lot!

+1 to what Mark said. Some of the best contributions have nothing to do with knowledge, but with courtesy and respect. There's nothing worse than working your a$$ off on a build and then posting pictures to "dead air." Let's face it, we're all still kids at heart and love to show off our creations.

arwokc, Thanks for the reply. I did mean "participate" not just contribute. Even a post saying "hello, I'm new here" is participating or maybe a "Thanks Omar for a cool sight" Not everyone feels compelled to post technical insight and maybe a lot feel a little intimidated to post such. Some of my favorite posts I've read here were just humorous remarks!
It would be great if we can keep this site full of amp junkies though..

I feel really bad for even starting this thread. I had just gotten fired from a job for "quality issues" even though the real reason for my firing was me openly criticizing management for their lack of attention to quality.

I guess that qualifies.

First time I have ever been fired in twenty five years of kicking butt (Not my assessment, but the assessment of numerous reviews from both peers and management).

I later learned the guy doing the firing had a chip on his shoulder because his younger brother made a fortune working at Adobe, and he is still incapable of differentiating between his ass and a hole in the ground. I've had multiple recruiters tell me they were sorry I had to ever work for this total piece of excrement.

I am sorry I let one post set me off.

I can't speak for Omar, but I believe that he would agree that anyone who asks for help is indeed a contributor. Your question and the answers that follow serve those that come after you.

I promise to ignore the "my high school is better than yours" type of posts, and will answer any question that I can answer. There are no stupid questions, only people too afraid to ask, and I hope that never happens here.

So whether the question is "What is impedance?" or "What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen African swallow?" I will try my best to help. And I hope those more knowledgeable than me will put up with my silly questions.

So let's fire up the soldering irons, (and for those who don't own one, ask advice about buying one), and build some tone, and help out others that might be somewhere else along the path. It is a great journey worth sharing.

Oh that was the easy one. Impedance is much harder to explain

I have 100k on the plates of one half of a 12ax7 with a 1.5k cathode resistor and 22uf for a cathode cap. What is the source impedance to a tone stack with a 100k slope resistor, with 500pf/1M treble, .02uf/1M bass, .02uf/25k middle, what is the load, and what weighs more, a living African swallow or a dead parrot?

Lefty, I was in the same position about 10 years ago. I got fed up with the craptastic quality of a software/hardware IT product (doing 3rd tier support). Started trying to make things better, through what I thought was constructive criticism. Out on my butt after a few weeks.

They dropped the whole product line within the next 6 months, then promptly got bought out by a competitor. For cheap, I might add.

So I feel your pain, bro!

If I remember correctly Plate driven tone stack source impedance can be calculated by taking the plate load resistor (100k) and paralleling it with the internal plate resistance of the tube (60 something K) for about 32K plus minus. now this was just off the top of my head, but that would roughly be the source impedance.
