Stupid Fender question

Post by Reeltarded »

When did the power transformers get plastic jacketed leads?

It's a bother. Make me feel good.

Yes way defenatly later pretty sure silver faces had cloth wire on the PTs up into the early 70s . different models may have changed over at different times.

Reel,

Confirming what Cbass said, here is a crusty J022798 from '72 with cloth that I dug out of the junk box:

Whaaaat? Oh THAT Leo.. :)

Hey when we order transformers, it's whatever the manufacturer puts on 'em. Lucky to get any insulator at all, never mind color coding. Plastic, yeh early 70's. The whole world was turning plastic.

I like that reddish-brown cloth like insulation the old UK iron had. Cambric, isn't that's what it's called? Veddy propah.

Vibrolux Reverbs in 100 amps i looked at 66/67 all have it. Numbers match but I thought I might have been punked.

Whew.

I don't think there was a distinct transition date. Here's a '64 Deluxe Reverb with all plastic. And here's a '56 Harvard that's stock except for power cord and power switch. The PT has a mixture of plastic and cloth.

This is a 1960 5G12 Concert It has never been touched
I also have a pair of NOS 606 OPT non cloth 1959 date code.
My wild guess is around 1959

Strange, isn't it? I don't know why I haven't noticed a transition.. I think I have waved off amps thinking transformers were swapped a couple times.

We have discovered something. Sort of.
