Buzz in Champion 600 cab

I was having issues with a buzz around "C#" and "D". I tightened the four screws that hole the baffle board to the cab and this got rid of the buzz, but the extra pressure against the baffle board greatly reduced the bass response.

I think I'll have to resort to using a a metal washer/s between the baffle board and the cab so the baffle board is free to vibrate without buzzing against the cab.

Has anyone tried this and does it work?

Are there any other things I could be trying to minimize buzz with this type of cab?

This is an inherent problem with those POS Fender cabs used for the Champion 600s. I tried a couple things, one of which included changing the mass of the cab by applying more wood internally... Didn't work. Honestly, I'm surprised there hasn't been a greater amount of discussions regarding this problem. It didn't seem to be a problem stock, but after I rebuilt it, it became an issue. The final EDIT:

The washers thing didn't help, I had a 0.022uF across a 250pF cap and when the 0.022uF broke connection the amp appeared clearer and brighter.

I've so far come to the conclusion that the the cab isn't the issue it's the speaker. I had the speaker (Ted Weber Signature speaker) sitting facing me with no cab or baffle board and it still displayed the buzzing.

I then tried the same thing with the Fender Eminence speaker and again the same buzzing. I'll write to Weber and see what they had to say but I suspect a 6" speaker doesn't overly like a guitars bass response.

Of course I'm happy to be proven wrong.

The small cone and low freq issue sounds right. You could replace the speaker for one with a greater Xmax, but then you would lose the high end. Sounds like it calls for a bigger speaker. Is there room to route for a 10", or at least an 8", and have the magnet clear the amp chassis?

Thanks for your reply. I would have put an 8" speaker in if it would fit, there just isn't the room. I wonder what Fender were thinking when they reissued the Champion 600, the Champion 800 would have been a better proposal.

Thanks for your link, I appreciate that, you have some nice ideas in that amp.

I haven't measured the chassis and the cab, but it seems there may be an issue with the chassis hitting the speaker on the Champ 600. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

I found a picture which shows the different baffle board sizes. Just out of interest did you use the 8" speaker because you had one or did you decide against using another 6" speaker?

I'll bet it sounded very nice, I've used the Champ 600 with a Weber Silver Ten and it sounds quite big.

The stock 6" speaker is terrible, the 6" Ted Weber signature is a very nice speaker aside from the buzz.

I'll take a few more photo's of the cab a bit later and post them up.

With regard to the speaker, I spoke to C.J. at Weber who in turn spoke with Patrick at Mercury.

C.J. took it upon himself to send me another speaker F.O.C.

I didn't ask for another speaker, I was just getting advice from them, I was thinking perhaps they had come across this before and could advise me?

Needless to say I was impressed with C.J. customer service. I suspect it will be much of the same, but again I'm happy to be proven wrong.
