My 2204 build for classic tones?

Post by fusionbear »

Hey guys, I have made a lot of recordings of higher gain tones but not so many of lower gain. Please critique my 2204 build and let me know if it is close enough for AC/DC tones.

Just a short jam over a favorite of mine:

Considering the tone is in the fingers and you won't be exact, the 2204 sounds good. I'd be happy with.

What's hangin' off the second gain stage's cathode?

sounds like a 2204, so I'm guessing' 10k with no bypass. But I know you like a bypassed 2k6 R in that spot too. Either way, sounds great.

You are correct. I have a switch that allows me to select stock or added bypass values. It was in the stock mode for the clip.

I just finished up a 2204 with the triode transformers. I did a cascade switch and a treble bypass switch for the 470K/470pf coming off of the preamp volume control. put the 100K resistor add off of the OMV(original master volume) wiper, reduced the 1st and 2nd .022uf caps too .0022uf, reduced the 10k cathode resistor to 2K2 and put in a PPIMV as well. I also am prepping it for a resonance control! so far this thing is incredible with the tone/gain and versatility. I want to try and soften the treble a bit more so I can really utilize the treble control, and also smooth out the gain or get it more saturated with some zener diode banding(switchable of course) and I am gonna put a footswitch relay into this thing to go betwen plexi/cascade800 stages!!! Anyone got any other suggestions i am having a blast with this amp!!!

Maybe a 1000pF bypassing one of your the plate resistors to bring down some high treble.

I've been thinking of setting up my presence control on my 2204 to be a bridged t filter. If you're using a 47k NFB resistor you could use 1k and 47k as the resistors. The duncan tone calculator's big muff filter works for it. I set the one resistor to 500Meg or something insanely large. You'd be able to crank up your treble knob no problem. I am going to put a trim pot in series of the bypassing cap(500pF) and adjust the amount of treble being bypassed through the presence's low pass filter.

I found that using two 22k resistors and a 120pF cap worked out pretty well.
