Just back from the Jeff Beck concert. No kempsters, no profilers, no arduinos, just immense talent. Surprise of the night, third number was "You Know You Know" from Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Inner Mounting Flame'. Of course the band rocked it up a bit, some bass & drum solo bits. I was astonished and delighted to hear it, still sounds fresh 44 years later.

No Tal, off on a solo tour I think. Here's the lineup, from JB's website:

"Jimmy Hall on Vocals, Rhonda Smith on bass, Jonathan Joseph on drums and Nicolas Meier on guitar"

Mr Meier played lots of guitars, guitar synth, 6 & 12 string acoustic-electric Godins, couple of others. Tough job keeping up with Jeff - he did it. Jeff used only 3, white Tele, white Strat, white reverse-neck Strat.

I saw him and SRV three shows in WPB. He rolled SRV 3 times.

I saw JB/SRV as well. One of my favorite shows ever.

Rhonda Smith is no slouch on bass. I believe she used to play in Prince's band.

I've been going to Beck shows, Jeff Beck not Beck - don't get me started, since 1976. That was Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group. Hard to beat that show, but anyway, Jeff almost always puts on a great one. I've seen one subpar show in about 50 or so over the years. What I really respect is his willingness to take chances on stage. Song renditions are hardly ever the same. Taking chances leads to bad things occasionally, but to unbelievable things as well. I have watched him paint himself into a corner quite a few times only to find a way out, to my surprise and often times his own. Pretty cool stuff. Oh, and I simultaneously hate and envy his right hand.

The playing, yes. The sound mix, meh. Flubby drums, no hi hat, bass mostly missing except at solo time, not enough from assistant guitarist, and I had to yell "TURN UP THE GUITAR!" JB's tone not present enough. Could'a done better mixing with my elbows. No kid behind the console, some skinny hipster with long white hair.

That plagues some of the venues here in Seattle. The worst is Neumos. Concrete floor and brick walls, no acoustic treatment, and the sound man pumps the bass way up and scoops the middle. Horrible for rock. Maybe works for hip hop or metal. Only thing missing is the rattle of a license plate.

:?: If there was ever a guy who does not require the services of an "assistant guitarist," it's Jeff Beck.

Was the stage set up like it was the last time i saw him - V shape, with one leg of the V consisting of the entire band and the other leg consisting of Jeff's amps?

No "V". Left to right, 2 half stacks for Jeff, looked like a JCM800 atop one, and an amp labeled "BECKTONE" on t'other, its cab facing backwards. Next, bass rig, looked like 3 2x12's stacked, no amp in sight. Drum kit then Nic Meier's guitar rig, another JCM800 & speakers pointed backstage. I know what ya mean, JB doesn't need an assistant guitarist, but it did work out and it's the artiste's choice who/what's in the band. They did some swapping 4's and dual leads, Nic's no slouch. Also a Pro Junior on the floor for Jimmy Hall's harp. They got some of the old Yardbirds vibe going, no complaint about that.

Opening act, kid with an acoustic and looper. He was good about waving his hair around like a proper rock star. Couldn't hear his guitar in the mix, maybe for the better. Must have been the best the promoter could do for $50. Hope this isn't a trend.

Hall was a proper theater, big dome overhead, full balcony @ 1300 capacity. In about 2 weeks, Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt, may have to go check that out too.

Question If there was ever a guy who does not require the services of an "assistant guitarist," it's Jeff Beck.
Actually, I think the other 'guitarist' is there more for synth than guitar. No keyboardist this time around. This guy is doing basically what Jennifer Batten did a while back. ALOT of Jeff's melodies don't make sense without the proper harmonic backing.

Sorry no Freeway Jam. I love those car horn honks he does but no dice this time.

Started Goodbye Porkpie Hat but swerved into something else after a minute or so.

I don't have the set list, and admit I don't know everything JB has done. But some of the best bits that don't often get heard IMHO are music cues from Frankie's House, and the intro & outro bits on Roger Waters' "Amused to Death." Absolutely heartbreaking. Those who haven't heard, look 'em up and get an earful of more excellent JB guitar work.

Jeff's collaborator on Frankies, Jed Lieber, no slouch either, hell of a musician/songwriter. I got to meet him many times, he showed up a lot backstage at shows I was working. Terrific guy.
