oscilloscope
Just got a new scope. The Rigol 1054Z. It's a 50 Mhz DSO. It has 4 channels and a host of features I'll only use half of. Frankly, it has more functions than I do. I downloaded a free code that unlocked a wide array of expanded triggering options and made it a 100 mHz scope. It may be overkill for amp design, but at $399, it costs only 50 bucks more than my old 30 Mhz analog scope, and is suitable for digital or R.F. use also. I went from Fred Flintstone to George Jetson. It can be had for $399 all over the net, and less at some, if you can finagle an education discount

Nice! I was very close to pulling the trigger on the exact scope and unlock the features as you mentioned. Unfortunately, the taxman cometh with a heavy hand and I had to pay heavily. I really wanted the scope for more of the solid state / logic level stuff I'm starting to do.
Oh, well - guess I'll struggle with my analog scopes a little longer....
How long did you have to wait for the scope? Seems like the longshoreman strike really messed up the deliveries.

Re: oscilloscope
It took 5 weeks! I can't complain though, considering the price , and the fact that I had the old analog scope still. I'll bet these will be available for some tme. When you can pull the trigger they might even be cheaper!

						Re: oscilloscope
Pardon my ignorance, but.....regards AF and tube guitar amps...what is the advantage of these digital scopes.?
That is to say, what can you do with one of these (very nice indeed) Digital Scopes that cannot be done with an Analog Scope.?
Thank You

Re: oscilloscope
better triggering, the ability to catch spurious ev3nts, the ability to capture waveforms to either send to a file or print out. DSO's have a bit of a learning curve, but they're pretty darn handy. You get a lot of features for not much more money than an analog oscilloscope. They can be really convenient, with the suite of automatic measurements, voltage frequency, duty cycle etc. Plus the cursors, 4 channels, etc. It's just a bunch of features for $399.

						Re: oscilloscope
The display is so much better on those new scopes.
Oh and since no CRT, they aren't three feet long!

You can probably connect it to a PC as well.
I looked up Rigol and they have a branch office just north of here in Beaverton.
Amazon also carries some.

Re: oscilloscope
Best price you'll find on the Rigol is here:

Seems to be a great little scope, for everything I have read. Don't know the input voltage rating though.
The Leader analog scope that I use has a 400v DC + ac peak rating, which tends to make up for stupid accidents.
Today, about the only advantage analog scopes have is simplicity, twist 2 knobs and you're up and going.

Re: oscilloscope
Wow...I think I paid 450 for my BK scope about 6-7 years ago.
And yeah.....it is a DEEP piece of equipment.

You know how people are with used equipment, everything, not just scopes and guitar amps.
I see those old Techtronix scopes on Ebay and Craigslist for 300-800 bux. Those are what.....from 1980-1990.?
I guess people think, because they were 2-4 grand when new.......
I had been looking at one of these... http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/bk-pr ... /2530b.htm
On paper, it is not as good as that Rigol.

Uh, sorry. Got you beat. My digital scope has an "Auto Set" button that does all that in one press.John_P_WI wrote:Today, about the only advantage analog scopes have is simplicity, twist 2 knobs and you're up and going.
$250 for the Hantek DSO5072P. Don't miss my first impressions:

Moose- the biggest reason I bought a new Tektronix similar to this unit was:C Moore wrote:Pardon my ignorance, but.....regards AF and tube guitar amps...what is the advantage of these digital scopes.?

-MUCH smaller on bench and storage
-Way lighter
-It's fully calibrated, more likely to stay that way with no tubes, etc.
-Actually a simpler unit to operate
-Hooks up to a PC via USB

At least the price has come down on Digital Storage scopes.
Not sure about the quality of the Chinese built test gear but the prices are sure attractive.
