Jelle has already said it was basically stock with some caps changed to orange drops- its not like the deluxe is a real intricate circuit. The oxford is most likely the original speaker so my guess is the amp was probably modded on the fly to suit the amp and ears of the customer after being refreshed, and not a whole retrofit.
I can respect Jelle wanting to keep the circuit at least for the moment and develop an amp model from it. Really the only reason I could see Jelle maybe having a bit of a responsibility to share is if it was a historical step in Dumble's history, an amp used on an important track, or even if it was a complete retrofit of a different circuit.
Seems to me its just a really good sounding modded deluxe that might or might not have been touched by Dumble.

By sharing information on the amp and its circuit here, I clearly demonstrated the opposite. All the information a DIY needs to have fun with has been shared, so have fun.

If I wanted to be selfish, I would not have posted here to share with you guys, I sincerely hope this is being recognized.

The handwriting; yes it looks different from the style that he had in the late 80s, I agree. But it does look like writing I have seen inside earlier amps and on plugs and footswitches. Plus, the use of that gray coax to the first stage grids combined with the Orange drops that replace the blue molded caps is typical for his work in the 70s.

I feel it sounds like a 70s Dumble in certain aspects. We had it in a room with four other Dumbles of different eras.

The timbre of the 70s Dumble amps is distinctively different compared to his later work. The Deluxe fits within that 70s tonal framework.

The 70s amps are less compressed, bolder, the mids pop out in a musical way and have a lot of extremely clear top end that just screams in the right hands. This is why I call it 'dramatic'. And that is also why I feel it has that thing that the 70s ODS amps have. Others here have mentioned here that the amps changed with the move from Santa Cruz to LA.

If you ever have the chance to hear a few Dumbles of different eras in the same room then it is very easy to pick up.

Maybe Max can chime in. He is always great with tonal descriptions.

Living in the UK that would be unlikely, but I have a 2nd Gen circuit, so mid to late 70s, so it will either sound like that say #40. Or the 1st Gen say Lindley #02. Or Ultraphonix. Or Hotel Hog. Or La Tostada. Or hey, maybe even like my Tweedle Dee with NFB. This is fun

My experience with the few amps I've played appears to be different than yours, as far as the 70s amps go. Incidentally, Joe Bonamassa recently bought a 70s Dumble from Steven Seagal, of which he said:

I could not plug in a guitar fast enough. Instantly I notice a big difference between this amp and my two Dumble Overdrive Specials. This amp is more compressed and roars with a harmonic complexity that I have never heard from one of Alexander/Howard's amps.

That Bonamassa one must be a first generation ODS. The one I have played sounded like that. Raw and compressed. Very cool amp.

In the spirit of calling things the way I see them -- as I always have -- Jelle, I find your post below somewhat disappointing. If people on this board had shown you the same courtesy, I believe there is a pretty good chance you would still be building inconsistent sounding amps.

I found it on ebay, suspected it had been Dumble modded and took the gamble.

Just to be clear, not for one second did I think or intend to imply that Jelle wasn't telling the truth. As far as Niks go, there have been at least a couple of them on this board since well before someone by that name actually turned up around here -- and to quote The Beatles, "some have gone and some remain". I would hope that doesn't turn all of us into cynics, however. The thing I find most fascinating about the majority of the claims made on commercial grounds on this board, regardless of who makes them, is that this place has been about deciphering someone else's work to begin with. It begs the (rhetorical) question of what kind of a contradiction that is.
