You can use a 10MHz probe with a 1GHz scope - no problem, - but it will of course only be accurate up to 10 MHz.......

Geez, Tom, I'm afraid to click!
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

They actually look OK. I looked with great interest, as we have this unseen monster hiding at work, - this monster eats scope probes
They constantly disappear without noone using them......
Big brand probes - TEK, Agilent etc are a LOT more expensive, - and given that it is in fact just a voltage divider, albeit with one or a few caps for freq compensation, t makes we wonder - for many years now...

Re: Want/Need Oscilloscope/Please Help!
any more helpful hints about this and also wondering what other electrical equipment beside simple things like meter might be useful. I have chance to pick up some old surplus equipment form older tech

Inexpensive Chinese probes from eBay will be gentle on your wallet and should work fine for what we do.
Something like this, buy 2 of them:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/P6100-DC-100MHz ... 3f446d7d96
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Oscilloscope ... 233b910a38
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oscilloscope-Sc ... 257f143e7d
Make sure they are 10X and have a 10X voltage rating of at least 600VDC.
At these prices it is hard to get hurt. If they don't work out (and they will) you can always go for the more expensive domestic stuff. I figure the lower priced domestic stuff is the same as what you see in these auctions but for 3x or 4x the price.
