Looking at the layout of the Triode Express kit, it uses a 1ohm 2w resistor from pins 1 and 8 to ground from the power tubes. TAG layout just has a bare wire to do the same thing.
Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using the resistor?

Adding a 1R resistor there is a very common mod to make measuring idle current in each tube easy.  You measure voltage at pin 8, and since 1A over 1 Ohm = 1V, the voltage you read is numerically equivalent to the amperage.  Accordingly, if you see 40mV (0.040V) that means the current is 40mA (0.040A).
