You know, i think this type of info is why I am so interested in the t-wreck phenomenon... He didn't go and order crazy mil spec parts, or special caps or anything, he used what he had... which is another reason why none of the amps are the same, either layout or schematic-wise... he could adjust for each amp and each set of transformers... etc etc etc.

One of these days i may get around to building the "perfect" amp... buy all the bst parts i can afford, nice caps, nice resistors, NOS tubes et al, but truth be told, a lot of the amps i built (and am getting back in to building) were made with what was available... so i had to sit and fiddle with filters and values to make it right... my results were not Ken-worthy, but the hands on stuff helped a lot in understanding why stuff sounds like it does.

I dunno if the t-wreck is even the best amp for my style, i like a little more preamp gain at lower volumes, but it sure will be interesting finding out!

Well, you could knock off Thurston, Gilligan, the Professor (did he have a name?), and the Skipper. Then let Mrs Howell in on a little bit of the fun, just in case you ever got rescued, and string her along since she would inherit Thurstons fortune. And in case that didn't work out, you could design a killer amp that you sold for $1500 that resold for $25,000, and date fashion models and hang out with rock stars. Or one you sold for $5k and hang out with fashion models that wouldn't date you because of your weight issues, and hang out with guitarists that only other guitarists have ever heard of.

Either way, my choice would be to stay on the island with Ginger and Mary Anne where my only daily task was to fish for dinner while the girls gathered fruit.

Maybe some old tubes would wash up on shore, and I could build a guitar out of palm trees and coconuts, and use lightening together with my coconut rectifier and transformer made from vine windings to prove what a rock star I was to "the girls." But I figure with all the other men gone, eventually they would start to warm up to me, regardless, even if I looked like Howard (on a bamboo scooter).

Agreed on the half power switch, just loses it balls but doesn't really get quieter.

That's not making me happy. I'd love to have an EL-84 Wreck, but I can't crank it up, between my tinitus and the places we play, I have to keep the volume low, 18 watt Marshall type volume. I'm afraid any Wreck will be simply too loud.

Yeah build the 2xel84 and work around it to make it(tweak it) more suitable with that output...

Has anyone here ever tried a liverpool or express with a cathode bias 2x6V6 or even a cathode biased 2xel34 output?

The two 6V6 particularly should still sound balsy and have no more than 12watts, maybe with some value adjustments around filtering and PI, good results can be had at lower volumes without losing much of the wreck signature sound.

I am not sure if you mind me asking (I dont care about the minutia either) but I built an express on a JTM45 years ago and always thought it was waaaay too bright.

I ended up with a 0.0047uf and 160K on 3rd stage, along with a whole bunch of other stuff.

So my question is what was the restor value between 2nd and 3rd stage?

I had also thought of an RC to put in parallel with one of the plate resistors also but never did. Can you share those values?

I've also seen the R/C network sugested for wreck builds across the tonestack, instead of the plate resistors.

The other issues with the amp were related to the fact that Ken had used flea clips. Several solder joints had become 'dry' with the years of passing current through a weak joint. This is a common problem with flea clips over time, made worse by the fact solid core wire is used.

What is the issue with flea clips and solid core wire becoming "dry"? Only thing I can think of is amount of metal-to-metal contact surface area is less with these two??

I am sticking to solid core wire, but just got 100 -old- Vectorboard flea clips similar to the GC Electronics ones. Grack.

(so old that the VB part # has NO hits on google, lol)
