Billy, if you have time, and are so inclined to continue the discussion, I have a few questions regarding your reply:

When you are talking about tweaking cap value, what do you mean by "like all 3's"?

When talking about the old ceramic caps, which PI coupling caps do you mean, the ones at the input of the PI, or on the output of the PI? I am surprised to hear that Fender used anything but the blue molded caps for coupling and tone stack - except in the case of small (pF) caps.

-------

Right now, we are leaning toward a single-channel with HI and LOW inputs, and no tremolo. I will post a pre-build schematic when I get it done.

Thanks,
Lou
Lou,
Sorry, did not see your question.
Fender always used ceramic treble, bright and PI cap (main cap to phase invertor). Usually pf value(500pf ,PI) but sometimes the pi is .oo1. Going too big here is a very common mistake. Except in a bass amp. Many would see those cheap bad ceramics and replace them with silver mica. Thing is , those older ceramics sound quite good in a vintage circuit. The new ceramics not so much.
The 3's referred to the tone stack. Fender used .03 on some of the AA763 circuits. I have tried .03, .03, 330pf. All 3's. It used to be a thing years ago, supposed to be some magic mojo.

Lou,

I don't have much to add except that you are right, it is looking a lot less like a SR. :P

The other thing is that I have an original, stock 65 SR. I veered away from that amp mainly because I found this place and started spending my time on all the great amps documented here. But my point is that I recently dug the ole SR out and was instantly reminded of how great that effing amp really is. It has far superior cleans/chime compared to any amp I have ever plugged into or built. My personal definition of classic clean and TONEFUL. I just did some gigs with it and those gigs were a blast. Kinda took me back full circle.

Anyway, just wanted to mention my re-awakening in light of what you are considering. Best of luck.

Thanks VK! We are indeed going to move forward on this build, and I will start a new thread when we get to that point. I am moving in a month, and I am renovating the house we're moving to (and there's one heck of a lot of renovating to do...).

Don't have a clue. I use polystyrene in new builds. They don't dont sound like ceramics , but they sound good. Sweet n silky.

It looks like there is a slew of NOS disc caps on ebay.
