Complete amp re-wire questions

Post by WORMDIRT »

I was looking to re wire my entire Sundown rebel, it looks like a rats nest in there right now, and I want to bring it into some serious amp porn territory. The only thing I really know about as far as wiring goes is keeping AC/DC away from signal, and I don't even know if that is true. First off I have a few questions for you guys.

1. Is there a definitive guide for wiring?
2. Is this a worthwhile thing to do in terms of sound/hum reduction and reliability.

One thing about the Sundowm amps that I have seen is that they used all solid wire. Most of the problems I've repaired were related to broken wires. For that reason, rewriting may be a benefit.

There are several Fender circuits that are similar in topology. You can probably adapt a layout drawing. It's your basic 2 preamp tubes > LTPI > 2 power tubes. You'll have to figure out the extra switches.

If you want some reading on wiring, I would recommend Kevin O'Connor's TUT3 book.

Eliminate the ground switch and cap, you don't need them with a grounded three-wire cord.
