Re: Ceriatone overtone special
While we're on the subject of chassis, is the powder coat useful in any way besides its cosmetic appeal?

A better form of "paint" - it's a bitch to scrape off for conductivitybenoit wrote:While we're on the subject of chassis, is the powder coat useful in any way besides its cosmetic appeal?

Re: Ceriatone overtone special
Can we stear this thread to a discussion of changes for Nik's layout to get the best Funkalicious layout for Brandon's chassis? I am working on that layout now and want to get it funkalized to the max.
Great things happen in a vacuum

What about Normster's various layouts? Do they have issues?bnwitt wrote:Can we stear this thread to a discussion of changes for Nik's layout to get the best Funkalicious layout for Brandon's chassis? I am working on that layout now and want to get it funkalized to the max.

Re: Powder Coat
The electrical bond is temporary. Long-term, the adhesion is caused by a normal paint/glue type of process, triggered by melting the powder in an oven.FUCHSAUDIO wrote:
It's also bonded to the metal electrically: The powder is polarized, as is the box. The finish and box are almost welded together, as they are opposite poles from one another. Me like

Ok, so I've got the message that powder coating is durable, attractive, and long lasting. But let me repeat myself: is there any reason to do it on an aluminum chassis other than getting a professional look that will hold up over time?
Re: Ceriatone overtone special
Ok, I guess not. Search Wikipedia for more powder coating details.bnwitt wrote:Can we stear this thread to a discussion of changes for Nik's layout to get the best Funkalicious layout for Brandon's chassis? I am working on that layout now and want to get it funkalized to the max.

Others will have to comment on applicability to Funk's chassis.

There was this as well but looks like work in progress.
Normster - if you don't want the links here I'll edit the post.

No.
Aluminum can be plated, anodized, painted, or powder coated. It's more a cosmetic choice, but it does need some kind of protection to prevent corrosion. You also need to make sure your coating will permit a solid ground connection, or you will need to sand the coating at your circuit ground points.benoit wrote:Ok, so I've got the message that powder coating is durable, attractive, and long lasting. What flavor of layout are you working on?
(Fingers crossed for a 100w Bluesmaster HRM)

Re: No.
I've got a couple of Allen amps, 8 years old now, with uncoated sheet aluminum chassis. Both are free of any corrosion. Also, a chassis like the Funk chassis is powder coated on the outside only.FUCHSAUDIO wrote:Aluminum can be plated, anodized, painted, or powder coated. With all due respect, corrosion protection on aluminum isn't a strict requirement, though I'm sure there are some environments where bare aluminum wouldn't fare so well.

+1
Although I guess an HRM layout would work well since the BM differences are along the lines of component changes, at least from what I have been able to gather. I am looking at doing an HRM with EL34s for my next project.
