Huge Pop when turning on amp

Post by JammyDodger »

Hey All,

I have a 183 version that I built about 6 years ago. I haven't played through it much for the past two years.

If I turn on the power and standby switches together, I get a very loud 'static' noise for about 1 second. This happens about 5 seconds after I've switched it on.

If I turn only the power on, wait a bit then turn the standby switch on I get a series of pops or chirps at a much lower level.

No noise at all after its up and running, plays great.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers, Mike

Hello, you may want to clean your tube sockets. Oxidation can build up if the amp has been sitting for a while. P.S. no Deoxide on power tube sockets, preamp tube sockets only. It is not rated for the amount of heat that is generated at the power tube sockets. Also, some people think that if you hit the stand by switch before the tubes have heated up, you will strip the cathodes and decrease the life span of the tubes. There is not 100% agreement on this but I figure better safe than sorry.

I had an amp come back for servicing a while back, similar problem.

Found out that the noise was being generated by the PI tube, culprit was the tube and a dirrty socket.
