Too chewy tone??

Post by dogears »

Just finishing up some 80s voice tweaking and I did this clip..... I like it as does the amps owner. Do you guys think it is too chewy or just right? Does it need to be a hair brighter? Fwiw, this is a Baker B1, not the RF. The axe is not as bright as my RF.

G1265 and SM57 dead on but closer to edge than center.

Thanks!

I really like the "honk." I do believe that some more "bite" (brighter?) would be nice. Not HRM?
Thanks for sharing. Excellent playing, as always.

I would have not guessed that is an 80s voiced amp at all as -- through my PC speakers -- it sounds buzzy at the bottom and muffled at the top. I believe this other clip is more along the lines of what I expect to hear when I see the words "80s" and Dumble in the same sentence [ :D ]:

Ahh... The bottom.... I was trying to get the smooshy chewy bottom of say...Rugged Road. That is intentional. I like it... As for top end, I think the edge micing of the 1265 is the culprit. Although the amps owner likes dark. I usually use a small bright cap on the master, but I did not on this one, per request.

I'll record a clip later, using my EVM cab and an Audix mic. Probably will sound totally different.

I understand. How were the tone controls set? If the amp was in PAB mode, then it really doesn't sound much like my 80s amps -- and the tone controls settings are irrelevant. If not in PAB, then might you have dialed it in a la RF, i.e., bass at 1+ o' clock and treble at 10ish?

Well, it takes one to know one (dog that is), I suppose. :D

I actually use those very same settings in my Skyliner amp with a Tele, and that's my favorite Tele sound from my amps -- until I step on the PAB, then the bottom is 100% gone. With the 335, as much as there are some good frequencies that come through that way as well, I always have to revert to the earlier RF tone settings from the 80s (which are basically LC's current settings) with my Skyliner, those being treble at 12 o' clock, mids at 11 o' clock and bass at about 10 o'clock. Still think the "classic" tone stack sounds better with the 335, however.

Great playing! To be honest at those settings I would like it a hair brighter.Just a hair.If the treble was on 7 or 8 it would be perfect but if this is all there is in the highs I would like the amp to be just a little brighter.

Ed, we were referring to tone settings using "clock" terminology, such that 12 o'clock is "5 out of 10" (i.e., halfway up), 10 o'clock is like "2" etc.

I remixed the track... Pulled down the lead level and subtracted 1db at 250hz. I added several db at 6000hz...

The bottom end feels stiff and I guess you can't dial that out of the mix. Amazing, because it kind of sounds "buzzy" in a HRM way, and yet it isn't a HRM. My experienmce with the non HRM amps is that the bottom end is much softer when it breaks up.

Hah!In that case i would simply call the customer that his amp is finished and leave it the way it is.

Scott,
Have you tried an '57 ORTF setup, say 2-3' back? It should give a fairly accurate picture of what you're hearing in the room.
