NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Sorry to send you over to TGP, but you have got to see this Hiwatt disaster:

Damn, some folks should never be allowed to plug in a soldering iron.

Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Yes, but how does it sound?
Just kidding, I don't think I would be brave enough to try.

Wow why in the world. That's what a cobble fuck looks like

Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Battery bias still used by some of the hi fi DIY folks. There's a question or thread every now and then on Audio Asylum. I would never use this technique in a guitar amp.
Some over there also like constant current regulators instead of plate or cathode resistors. Maybe there's some advantage but I'll stick with Keep It Simple, Stupid. Those who wish to experiment with batteries or CC circuits, live it up.

SO...hey, PTP sounds sooooooo... much better than tag board - you really should bring that amp in for an upgrade if you want it to sound its best....

Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
What is it you guys don't like???
Are the components between the tubes and controls or not?
I think those loops are designed very carefully to contribute the exact amount of EM coupling to make the circuit sing.

I think he should have used the white/brown pair instead of the white/org and white/blue pair. Everyboby knows the white/brown pair sounds the best.vibratoking wrote:What is it you guys don't like???

Sing, or hum? Hum, if they forgot the words, that's what they do.vibratoking wrote:I think those loops are designed very carefully to contribute the exact amount of EM coupling to make the circuit sing.
What a wretched looking pile o' pizz somebody turned a perfectly good Hiwatt into. What a shame. Did the photographer cover the power amp? What's there, a Ryobi battery pack or 2 wired in series for cathode bias, or 3 or 4 for fixed? I'm afraid to see... put hands-over-eyes smiley thing here.

Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Good thing they didn't try soldering to lithium batteries, Darwin's selection may have been implemented.
Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Quick, take down this thread. Seeing a HiWatt in that sort of condition could cause serious damage to the sanity of many of our members (those that still have any sanity left).
Holy crap, that is just a crime. Someone should be killed for turning a 50 watt work of art into such a garbage pile.

Re: NiCd batteries for bias?!?
Batteries for the power tube bias would be a great marketing gimmick. Battery goes dead amp blows up buy a new one.
