I bought a clone Liverpool used but...

Post by cap217 »

Not sure what I have here. I bought a Liverpool from the guy whom this was built for. He had a Rocket for sale too. I miss my old Kane LP so I bought this asap. He said it just didn't have a bright switch which I was ok with.

The last knob seems to be a gain knob of some sort.

The mid pot doesn't react like a true mid.

Its not as gainy as a livepool but its close.

Its not as articulate (not sure I can explain) but its not like my old Liverpool.

What do I have? Following the layout it looks to be right or at least very close.

Looks like a Liverpool. That last knob is the presence pot.

Just has different PT&OT arrangement and different power supply board.

After going through the circuit it is a Liverpool but the presence knob is acting like a gain knob. Yes, it gets a little brighter ask turn it up. On my old Liverpool I had to keep the presence knob almost turned down (tele) but with this I can turn it up and it never gets too bright.

The NFB is set by the resistors chosen in the circuit and to which OT tap.

The presence pot either boosts or cuts the frequency range of the NFB circuit.

Ideal I think would be adjustable NFB pot with set resistor to keep the NFB from going to 0. Or in other words a NFB range pot.

Here is a reply from the builder:

The guy that ordered that one has a bunch of them. I built them all with differences so they wouldn't be redundant. It has a different OT than a regular pool and different lead dress. Other than that it's pretty close to a stock pool.

AND

It's a presence circuit. It could be a bit different than the last one you had but it's not a gain pot. That OT is a little higher powered and spec'd differently

Did you used to have your bright switch off before on your last LP? Adding a bright switch now will obviously give you some brighter options, if you'd like your presence knob to be unusable like mine

I also see that you have an input grid resister on your first tube. That may not make any sonic difference (and just increase the amp's stability) but that is not really a stock Liverpool feature.

I wonder how the transformers compare to your other one as well. That can come into play as well.

I also see that this one has polyester caps as opposed to most orange caps that are polypropelene. But the the PS series are polyester as well, so I guess these yellow ones could be more authentic to original trainwreck tones than the 615p or 616p. If I get to build another express or something, I think I'd like to try polyester instead to see if it smooths things out a bit more.

Tubes always make a difference too. Who knows how much things can vary with different tubes in different positions.

Just for comparison here is my old LP.

I wonder what transformers he used before and on this one? Looks like Hybore but not sure what he means by a different more beefed one. People usually use the same one for a TW build.

I guess you can disregard my suggestion of different caps or the input resister. Your old one was the same.
