5751's are definitely a cool tube, I used to run them in tweed Bandmaster or Bassman combos for really clean stuff with Strats & Teles and loved 'em! Can't remember if my faves were RCA's or GE's, one of those, don't have any left these days. Never tried the Sovtek 5751, but I like their 12AX7 LPS in a lot of amps...also for new production, I like the gold-pin JJ's with the longer plates. ECC 803's maybe? Can't remember off hand.

On the Amperex that you have that didn't knock you out, do you know what the code is that's etched on the glass? Does it have a Delta symbol? I'm really curious about how the Amperex 12AX7's varied through the years, wondering if there's maybe a batch/group of them to avoid. I've been blown away by the ones I've got, but it seems other people, not so much...
First 25 years of playing, I never got along with EL84's...Now I think, WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH ME????

My Amperex 12AX7's are in a Rocket i built that is currently on loan to a fellow picker. I should have it back in the next week of two and i'll try to post some pics of them. Off-hand, the only thing i remember about them is they have orange writing on them and they came in green/yellow Amperex boxes.

As for the 5751s, I'm definitely going to look into picking up some NOS ones to compare with the Sovtek and JJ versions. You are spot on in saying they are great for single coils! Such great clarity and articulation.

Not sure that i have tried any of the gold pin JJs....I'll have to put some on order!

Hi JKey04

I'm wondering if lowering the 220K plate load resistor to 100K would have achieve a similar result. The other mod that comes to mind is having a voltage divider prior to the PI.

Hi TJ

The issue with Hi Test is I'm in Australia, he's in the States and I'd have to phone him which is a hassle. I'd prefer to use email, but he doesn't work that way.

I'm hoping to have the amp up and going again this weekend.
Yours Sincerely

Oh, didn't realize you were in Australia Mark. I can see where that would be a huge hassle. Hi-Test is old school with communication and payment for sure, that would be my one complaint.

Just out of curiosity...

What have been happiest with in your Rocket for rectifier and EL84's?

Are you using the Dynaco A470-style OT, or have you done any experimenting with others?

I experimented with the 100k@plates instead of 220k, sounded smoother and more round, with extra headroom. I ended up preferring the 220k's, just cause I really dig the extra snarl and grind....but, I run my amp overdriven 90% of the time, usually with humbuckers.

Hi Matt, I would have thought a lot of the harmonic content would have come from the CF onwards.
