I use DipTrace on my OS X machine to draw schematics and then layouts I typically do in Inkscape. DipTrace is also able to do PCB layouts.
The free version of DipTrace is for non-profit use only and limited to 300 pins an 2 signal layers on a PCB.

They look pretty cool. Have you got a simple "non-secret" schematic and/or layout that you'd be willing to post/share, in a jpeg, so that I can see what they look like? DipTrace shows all the truly advanced stuff that can be done, but I'd like to see how a simple tube amp design looks. Inkscape simply appears to be a blank canvas drawing program and that seems perfect for my use. I hate predefined templates, as they always, sooner or later, will bite you in the ass or tie your hands, often in ways that you would never expect!XgamerGt03 wrote:I use DipTrace on my OS X machine to draw schematics and then layouts I typically do in Inkscape. Here is an example of a schematic made with Inkscape. (from AX84)

Re: Anybody With A Mac Computer……...
The best way I've found is to have both...
I keep all my design software and drawing/Audocad Schematics,Layouts, web design.. etc on my PC ( Have about 20K in software and Adobe Suites on that system) It's all configured perfectly for my needs..I've had that system for 7 years and comes on only when I need it..
My Powerbook has all my Audio and recording software and basic needs (schematics, layouts,Pictures and tech notes) and that is my everyday surf the web/email info..

I spent ~ $100-150 on a used PC and use ExpressPCB. The software is very easy to use with a good number of pre drawn parts. Additionally there are a lot of custom icons on the web you can copy, and the software is free.
Then use your Mac for all your computing.
The last MS software that was trouble free, was MS-DOS. Of course that's because Allen and Gates bought it from a competent programmer.

The best thing Apple did for Mac OS was to move it to unix, a tried and tested, open, and free operating system. It took a couple of years for OS X to get straight, but in very short order, my computer was running for weeks, and sometimes MONTHS without a crash or reboot. Having worked with Macs and PCs since time began, it is nothing short of miraculous in a consumer-oriented computer.
I have used both platforms since the dawn of silicon, and Windows has always sucked balls. But I would venture to say that the fact that Windows sucks so bad, and needs constant attention from IT geeks, has created more employment than the auto industry.
BTW, how would you like Windows in your car?

Thanks Xtian, I thought I'd get clobbered on this. The only good thing I can say about MS and Gates, is that he is giving away (and getting additional donors) billions of dollars to help conditions in 3rd world countries.
Bless him for that,...fuck him for his half assed products.

I'll likely get pummeled for this, but:xtian wrote:So true!ampdoc1 wrote:The last MS software that was trouble free, was MS-DOS. Of course that's because Allen and Gates bought it from a competent programmer.

"The day that MicroSoft makes something that doesn't suck, will be the day they start making vacuum cleaners!"
They make and market nothing but air! They not only don't make their own hardware, they don't even make their own discs, etc! It is also pretty obvious that they do not thoroughly test their software/products from A to Z, beginning to end. They only seem to do "spot checks" and it appears that there are different teams checking each section , with the right hand not knowing or caring what the left hand is doing!

@The Ballzz: Not, it's true. Microsoft is just a marketing company. Well, OK. They hire and promote a lot of talented programmers, but I have no idea what they do with their IP. Probably all slaving away fixing bugs.
