Another cool recipe

Post by Reeltarded »

I don't draw, so play along with me. It's a Marshall 800ish with the CF clipping network. You can add your own thing there. It doesn't have to have it, but it really should. :)

1stage is 10k right on the grid pin. 270k plate, 2k7/.68, .0022 coupler, 470k/.0022 to 250kA

2stage is 68k on the pin, 100k plate, 2k7/.68, .022 coupler, 470k/.0022 to 1MA.

3stage is 820R unbypassed with a 68k right on the grid pin.

PI is 100k-.22 (+) and 100k-.022 (-)

Output couplers are .1u

TS is stock except treble control. Treble pot is limited to 120k. Slope control 33k-83k. 500p treb cap. Old style pres. .1u and .00047/1M resonance.

It's real good. Sustains into feedback at any volume with almost any guitar. The gains and master scale very well together. The tone controls are useful in all ranges.

It's virtually noiseless. It doesn't get close to squealing. When it breaks loose it howls in the vocal range. I can play it with the sound I want facing into the amp at 1 meter with it on 7. Everything on 7. This is lots of gain. :) from full gain like that a humbucker cleans up or a single coil becomes crystaline by backing off. Guitars don't get dull with this amp. Very good.

"Looks" great! Coupla questions: EL34s, right? How many?

Sustains into feedback at any volume with or without the CF clipper?

50w with 34s. Yaya clippers don't add sustain. It goes on and on even clean. Really good.

Sounds like an excellent recipe. Question?, treble pot limited? With a resistor?
What type of CF clippers , red LEDs, other diodes? I remember you like back to back mosfets for clippers. What kind of voltages? Standard jcm 800 iron?

Keep up the good work. I have gotten some really good Marshallesck ideas from your posts! :)

Yes, 250k pot with a resistor. Use a big pot over the 250k and tune that. It gives a completely unexpected outcome, at least to me. All of the wild horse spirit moves down a couple octaves and turns into warmth that blooms under your fingers instead of unpotted pickup squeal.

My typical clipper is installed in this one. 6 position switch with blank for bypass, a red led, a pair of 20v, a pair of transistors, a pair of 12v, and a pair of 1n914. The feed is 10k from the CF and I have a pot with 25k of lift for the whole circuit. .47u cap isolating that.

This is the second earlier BB combo reissue I got to beat on. I ditch the GZ34 for diodes and both of the amps have around 415v on the output. Typical dropping across the nodes. All 50u filters. This expedition was very educational. That whole thing about the treble control makes you think.

You got the standard 100K Ck on the CF, or are you use ~50K?

100k. Have not wiggled either way on that. I like 56k though.

I think this thing would be absolutely cruel if it had a higher R OT. I should try that. I tried to upload a clip but it gets stuck.

Your description of the sound REALLY makes me wish I was about to start a new amp. You using any NOS tubes or the usual suspects?

Right now has some pretty good tubes in it but it works really well with whatever it gets as long as they are decent. Every guitar sounds like itself.

I can't get any clips uploaded to my Photobucket. Sucks.

The only thing I would like to know at this point is what a higher primary OT would do. I know what it would do. I want to know if that is too over the top. I have a 5k8 sitting here but I really shouldn't.

lol but I should. I know that kills...

Ok, bandmaster tweaking starts in an hour! More coffee!

Miles great you just nailed V-1 on SSS #005 .68/2k2 with a 100r tail.
not 2k7 and 250k or 100k + 150k. Killer.

I wasn't trying!

I'm too stupid to do anything on purpose anyhow.

Reminds me of a revered physicist I was talking to just before he retired... I was talking about the "secrets of success" and he quipped "Better lucky than good!"

It's always great to see you 'round, Miles.

Cheers!
