LFB SSS

I failed to take any gut shots before I boxed it up, but I'll snap some next time I have it open (I swore that I would quit tweaking this amp for a while and just play it and get to know it). To answer some questions, yes this is in an ODS sized chassis. I went with two rows of tubes with the front row up until the preamp boards. No need for DC filaments to do this. I actually took some inspiration from the Two Rock Opal with regard to the tube placement.

Electron, I didn't quite understand your question about the 100R resistors -- PM me and I'll see if I can help out.

Thanks again guys. I'll try to get some clips up shortly (although my playing sucks lately due to the fact that I've spent too much time with a soldering iron in my hand).
I`ve tried the LFB on first stage n second stage in n out, to me it sounds better for CLEAN with it IN....it`s outa phase so it`s a negative loop.....gets dirtier w/o..depending on sounds you like, remember eric johnson`s original SSS sounds waay dirtier to my ears than what you guys are building here, i suspect NO negative FB loops period in his amp! lol! Really happi w/mine, i get that squishy violin warm liquid lead sound w/hi end chirp with a EJ fuzz into a TS-10! :) The clean is to live for of course!

Based on what I've seen/read, I think you're right about EJ's not having any negative FB loops (other than the normal output to PI).

BTW, here's a quick iPhone clip of this one that I forgot to post back when I finished this one. Straight in through a 1x12 EVM12L

This sounds great even through my laptop speakers (not mentioning the lousy 3G connection, claimed to be fastest in the country :) )!
Mike, I've forgotten to ask - is that one completed as per the layout you've posted?

What are the fixed pieces of info or lore about Eric's SSS, particularly the pre/EQ, from those first couple albums? (Or was the preamp/Odyssey power amp also in the mix back then?). The bits I had gleaned:

The SSS seems to have started life as a low-plate classic. Eric had reported that he had sent it back for the Skyliner update (high plate?). Someone seems to have info that it is no longer a Skliner eq.

At pickup (original or update? I suspect the first) Eric had found it clinically clean. Dumble said he made the amp worse accordingly--iirc he told an interviewer he went to Radio Shack for junky parts, but removing LNFB could have worked as well and the guy is often cagey about the stuff he does.

Congrats
another great looking build
this one( along with your original layout) has me thinking...I might give this circuit a shot. Wondering about using a twin chassis.

Interesting comment, to me the reverb is a must but do the filters add a lot of versatility in this circuit? Do you find yourself changing the filter settings often.
Again beautiful looking and sounding build Mike thanks for sharing

You have nailed the sound on the Larry Carlton, Her Favorite Song recording that Max posted on your My ...on an SSS posting.

Congratulations on another great build. Hopefully you will post the layout for this one so I can build it too. Your SSS hybrid is probably my favorite amp.

Thanks

I appreciate it Mike. If only I could play 1/100th as well as Larry...
