Closing Down

Post by passfan »

Closing down a company I've run , with a partner , for the last 10 years. We made it through the lean years but have fallen victim to the "good ole boy" routine from around here. I did manage to land employment with a company I worked for back in the 90's as my old foreman is now the division manager of their building automation department. 50K a year , full benefits and a van. Still feeling melancholy about it though. My partner hasn't decided what he's going to do and we're both kinda in a rut.

Congrats Scott! That is great to hear! It's a good way to go.

It will be easier for ya in lots of ways and you'll have weekends free that you know about in advance. :)

About two years ago, I walked away from an opportunity that was mine for the taking. Honestly, I know it's not modest, but they loved me for the job and it was with folks I knew, not strangers. I didn't love the job. It paid well, but not well enough, and I was having trouble wrapping my mind around the 8:30 to 5 routine that it required. I can't say I regretted it, but I'd have been better off economically had I chose to grit my teeth and bear it.

It's hard to look at a job after you've been on your own. This is something everyone has to sort out for himself. There are no wrong choices here. Whatever you do, do it well, with both feet in. You were fortunate to find something quickly. Good luck!

Double hard when you're past 60 and not so far from retirement. There are all sorts of extraneous considerations.

Fortunately I'm 51 and still have a few years left to give. I'm also highly technical and can think on my feet. I probably should have done this 9 years ago when the house flipping business I was in failed but my buddy was standing there needing a qualifier with a handful of contracts. Started out turning a grand a week myself and it just never got any bigger.

Don't I know it. Plenty of 36k jobs local.... working in the dirt. This is a tech job with the van , cell, tablet etc. This is also the best company I've ever worked for. They have a slew of benefits and safety prizes. The support for the field is first rate. 300 plus employees and sales of over 40 million per year and growing. I still can't believe it , and they fawned all over me as if they were really excited to have me back, and.......I feel guilty for it. Aint that some shit ?

One thing Ive learned - when your good - and someone else cant do what you do - you become invaluable.

Im also in computers - surprises me every time I hear the same thing, but I learned to program at age 8 - so to me it seems like everyone should speak c++, just like english...
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

This is a good thing. It is fairly rare to find a job where the people are nice, the work environment is pleasant, the benefits are good, and, most of all, where you are wanted and respected. It sounds like you did well, pilgrim. Just remember, you can never rest on your laurels. They give you a paycheck and in exchange, they get to ask, "What have you done for me lately." It sounds like you'll be able to answer that one any time they ask, so you're in a good spot! There is something, maybe a lot, to be said for a regular paycheck.
