Low Wattage Hiwatt CP103

Post by Littlewyan »

Hi Guys

I'm thinking about building a 1Watt Hiwatt CP103. It will basically be a CP103 Pre amp strapped to the power amp of a Marshall JTM1. I don't know how well it will turn out of course as the Marshall Power amp is quite different to the CP103. Anyway I just wondering what speakers normally get used with this amp as I've heard that Pete Townshend used quite bassy speakers with his, which would make sense as this amp seems to have little bass and quite a lot of high end. Opinions please.

Highwatt amps of that era used Fane brand speakers and the cabinets where ported.
The Fane drivers had a tad less mid to them when compared to Celestions in the Marshall's amps that Pete used first so when you combine the added bass that the cab put out, the Highwatts far better Partridge OTs output transformers low end with they fact that all that better low end response let you run the amp with a lower bass control setting you end up with a puncher amp that holds clean to a louder volume than the Marshall set up !

Interesting. Reason I ask is the speakers I have in my cabinet are Eminence's version of Celestion Greenbacks. So I'm wondering how good the Hiwatt will sound through my cab. That's if I build it, its still in planning. I really like the cranked Hiwatt sound but also like the fact that I could dial back the master volume and get a nice clean tone.

Bringing back the master volume for clean tones is like unhooking spark plugs from you cars motor in search of more power if you get my drift?
For the best clean head room from a amp you want the power amp section near wide open and the preamp section just cracked open.

Well it'll give you a wider variety of tones. You could use and half or crank master and lower the pre like you said. From what I can gather with a CP103 they don't tend to break up until later on the volume knob, compared with Marshalls anyway. Unfortunately I've never played one, only heard through clips. I like what I hear but not being able to play the real thing makes it difficult to recreate the sound in a smaller box as I'm not sure what to expect!!!!
