Mustard???

Post by Fredaxis »

Hello, pretty new here, mostly lurking, great site!

I am preparing my parts for my next built (as soon as I finish my 6V6 Plexi) It's gonna be an Express!!!

I ordered a set of transformer from Chris yesterday, first good step.
A quick question about the signal capacitors: I have a little inventory of NOS Mustard caps, how would they fit in an Express?
I know they are nothing authentic in a TW,should I buy the right Mallory ones? Would they sound better than the Mustard?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Fred.

Mustard caps are polyester, just like those used and recommended in wrecks...

I'd really save those mustards for Marshalls or other builds which originally used them unless you're desperate to use them. They're getting ever more scarce and expensive and the 'correct' caps for the wrecks are relatively easy to come by. Allied and Mouser carry the PVC series and both will happily ship to Europe (Mouser generally cheaper as they'll use Global Priority).

I think that mustard indeed are polyester but for express it's polypropelene that should be used if I'm not mistaken.

For the record I build my Express with Sozo (repro Mustard as they say) and switch later to PVC. You have no idea how much it sounds better now, less harsh, better mids and overall some kind of frequencies extention.

I know Mustard sounds great on Marshall but PVC is THE choice for Express (I was amaze by the differences actually).

I'd save those for an old Marshall refurb or try to sell them to vic @plexi palace.

No, I keep my mustards or trade with something as interesting.
My 6V6Plexi is full of mustard, and every amp I will do looking a bit as a Marshall wil get them.

Thanks for the inputs guys!
