1st XP Build! Need help choosing the OT + a few other things

Post by MHProd »

I'm planning on ordering some parts from RJ for my first Express build and would like to get your input on your experience with various OTs. After doing some research, I narrowed my choice to the Pacific OT with the 6.6K primary. However, I'm intrigued by the Classic Tone TW OT and RJ's MM Stancor. Having said that, I never liked the MM stuff in Marshall and Fender amps... I always find them to sound bright and stiff/harsh which definitely wouldn't work in an Express!

My goal is to get in the ball park of Ingrid's sound.

BTW, looking at her circuit, anyone noticed the 220K 2W Carbon Comps instead of the usual 100K ?

Also, could you recommend someone who can make a good TW style logo? (not looking for a logo that says Trainwreck, just the right font and style).

Thanks!!!

Talk to RJ. He's done the most comprehensive comparos recently:

Hmmmm...where are you seeing the 220k's on Ingrid? The plate loads are 100k I'm almost positive.

I think that Ken's logo design is an old school line-drawn design...not a font, I'm afraid. Tattoo artists are usually great with these type of designs!

One thing I am sure about is that you can't go wrong working with RJ for your components as well as great TW insight. Good luck with your build!

Yep, I'll be getting most of the parts from RJ. Looks like I'll build the amp with his Pacific PT and OT.

I'm putting some of the parts together and spending a lot of time reading posts on the forum and looking at pictures of Ingrid and Francesca. I think it will take some time to match Ingrid tone but I'm up for the challenge. It took me 3 years of research and trial/error to accurately replicate the sound of my original JTM45s. Unfortunately, I do not own an original TW so it's going to complicate things a bit...

I just moved into a new place so if all goes well, I might be able to start the build in a month. I also should be able to post some clips too!

These are the 220Ks I'm talking about.

Those are bleeder resistors.

Ah, the bleeders. For some reason, I never picture those as carbon comps. Probably because I'm unable to get these values locally in a 2 or 3 watt CC. I've always used the "green ones".

Btw, feel free to share any JTM knowledge! :D

Im glad you mentioned the 220s. I didnt know that since a Ingrid schematic has not been made. I need to look at Ingrid a little closer.
So in what way will the 220s influence the tone of Ingrid compared to say Francesca. I know a bleeder resistor is for safty of draining the caps but you still waste power even if its minium during operation. Correct? 220s would make it feel tighter? looser?
