Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
I am at the end of rebuilding a 5E3 clone I traded for some repair work. I have what may appear to be a silly question. I have a Triode transformer 04218-ext which has more leads ten any wiring diagram I could find. There is an extra Brown/white and and extra blue/white off of the primary side that I don't know what to do with.. I asked the folks at the Triodestore the same question and perhaps the assumed I might have known what I was doing. I and wire diagram following novice. The attached file was sent to me from Triode and I still don't know what to do with the blue/white and brown/white. The diagram shows the term "SCREEN" for both of these leads could some one tell me what that means and where these leads would go. or do I tape and store.
thanks in advance
Dennis
as an aside the amp is up and running

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
Ultralinear taps if you want to use it that way. Otherwise insulate and stow.
Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
insulate and stow I understand. But now a new term has entered
"Ultralinear taps" what would that do and how would one do that?
Thanks

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
It's a circuit pioneered by the great Alan Blumlein that lets the screen grid voltage vary by a percentage of the variance in plate voltage making the tube operate somewhere between tetrode/pentode and triode. If you get the percentage of the tapping right for the tube type, you kill a lot of distortion, but only a little power. I wouldn't automatically assume the taps are the right place for 6V6s and I wouldn't do it in a 5E3 anyway.

Great insulate and stow it is
Thanks for the help

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
It looks like you have an abundance of extra wire looping 'round next to the tube sockets. I'd trim that up a bit - it's especially easy to do with that kind of wire.
Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
Ok as you can see from the new pics I have shortened the leads going the the tubs sockets. Thanks for pointing that out by the way. The amp is a good deal quieter than before. However I would like to see If I can get it even quieter. I have been reading around about ground loop problems with the 5E3 using only the jack chassis contact points as a proper grounding scheme. (I always though the ground was ground) but hey you guys know better than I what that means relating to Amps so I am just asking. I also added a pic of some additional grounds I added to the input jacks and wired that to the common ground bar on the back of the POTS which is grounded to chassis via star type connection.Zippy wrote:It looks like you have an abundance of extra wire looping 'round next to the tube sockets. I was thinking about changing the input and speaker output jacks to the marshall type does anyone see any problems with that changs ?
Any Suggestions for silent running would be appreciated.

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
What kind of noise are you trying to tame?
Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
It is really a low freq hum it is not obnoxious but is there there is also some high freq Chatter I have attached a sound file for reference.Firestorm wrote:What kind of noise are you trying to tame?
Would changing the jacks to non 3 pole cause adverse effect ?
Here is a dropbox link to a sound file of my noise if that helps

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
The chatter sounds like a tube, possibly a solder joint or other poor contact (a ground, jack or socket). I can't from the recording if the hum is 60Hz or 120Hz. How is everything set to generate it: anything plugged in?

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
I agree w/Firestorm. I think it really sounds like a tube going bad, probably the phase inverter. Try swapping out the PI with another tube. If the noise is still there it's probably a cold or unsoldered joint.
I spent two weeks tracking one down on a JCM800 clone - wild goose chase. Once I started chop-sticking around, I had it isolated in about 10 minutes. Poor connection on V2.

Re: Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Clone
Yep I can agree with that.
Sometimes we can't see the forest for.....well you know.
Make sure the tubes are absolutely working in the circuit before any surgery.
Have several 12ax7's?
Try a couple in the first tube slot and so on.
Once tubes can be eliminated, then you look at the wiring, then it is on to the lead dress which can be the most critical part of amp building.
