Brown face Fender bassman

Post by jshag »

Just had a client drop off a brown face with cream colored knobs Fender Bassman. Dying to plug it in and just turn it on. Don't know how long it has been dormant. Any suggestions on slowly powering it up on a proper resistive load?

Plug into the bass channel, turn it up, and watch out. These are some of my favorite amps, definitely among my favorite Fenders. They really rawk.

I would visually inspect the filters and the cathode caps and the bias cap before turning it on. If none look awful, go for it.

Really, the odds are very small. Worst case, a cap will burst. But if the filters are in a dog house, it won't make much of a mess. And most times, that doesn't happen anyway.

As for a rebuild, just buy all of the replacement electrolytic caps and leave the rest alone. Change the filters, the cathode caps and the bias cap and you will be golden.

Ha found the second power tube rolling around in the back that's all it was.
Could still use some bench check out

Even the cloth covered wires? They have shown no worse for wear

Be sure to check the resistor across each output tube as many times they look good but are cracked !
Removal or installation of tubes by means of Excessive rocking of the tube can stress the resistor and fracture and or fully crack it.

Hmmm, I've never seen a brown Bassman. Is it a 4-10 combo or head?

The 6G6-B or example. Blonde tolex, Brown face. Killer tones.

While your under the hood I would replace all the preamp tube plate load resistors with 1 waters, the voltage in the amps PI section really really call for one watters and just because I would replace the 470 resistors on each output tube socket and just save the original parts for the owner to stow away!
