Re: Trainwreck build - First amp
J,
Working with the pots mounted to the chassis can make it challenging to make some connections so if you think it is going to take a couple of tries to make it neat, get it right, and the way you want, then I would recommend making a wood template to mount the pots to externally and do your wiring outside the chassis. That way you can route your leads and make some of the finer connections, like the bright switch wiring, without being cramped in the chassis. When you are done to your satisfaction, then you can transfer the whole works to the chassis and smooth out your wires once it's in place.
That said, I personally do all my wiring right in place; no templates. It's personal preference. If you are using PVC insulated wire and are not sure you are going to get it right on the first try, do it outside...that way if you burn a wire you can remove it without being cramped. You also want to be careful with solid core wire. You only get a couple of tries to bend it. It can break easily inside the insulation and can be challenging to track down later if you get an intermittent short.
With all things Trainreck, you don't want to compromise. The tone stack wiring makes a difference.

Colossal, what about Zippy's trick: Mount upside-down my pot on chassis, solder everything, then flip them?

Re: Trainwreck build - First amp
Sure, that will work just fine. Saves making a template out of another material.JPGraphX wrote:Colossal, what about Zippy's trick: Mount upside-down my pot on chassis, solder everything, then flip them?

We're going to have to get Zippy to write a book on all his tricks... That seems like a cool way to simplify the pain of putting all those wires in the right place and soldering them with minimal PVC wire meltdown. He sure has acquired a vast array of tips and tricks. I sometimes wonder how loooooooooooooooooooong ago he started developing that expertise?

Here are my potentiometers wired and installed in my chassis. Is everything looking good?
Next step should be wiring transformer right?
Thanks for all tips and comments!

Kind of late on this one but this should clear things up for JP. Especially since he has the pots done.....
This was from a Rocket build and I used the wood for the front plate.
