Sourcing the parts...

Post by Trainlover »

Hi there.
After taking the plunge into a TW Express build earlier this year (which was quite succesful...) I am now considering a Dumble build. The good thing with the Trainwreck is that RJ stocks everything you need all at once. But what about the Dumble ODS? Is there an RJGuitars around here as well that does the same thing but for Dumbles? And if there's no one, where do you guys find the parts: chassis, faceplates, boards, transformers etc.? Can you make it look like the real deal or not?

Thanks everyone and sorry if that has already been asked but despite a forum search, I didn't find the info.

OK. But besides them, do you source other parts elsewhere? Do you upgrade transformers (for which?), change caps, change a few resistor or caps values etc? What do you change? I suppose the Ceriatone kit is a good start but what is needed to take it to the next level? I suppose there's as much discrepancy between the Ceriatone TW and the TW you can build from RJ parts and the Dumbles...
Thanks!

Nope. No one stop shop to really do it right.

Here's one way, though:

Headshell: http://www.amplifiednation.com/
Chassis - http://cepedals.com/Dumble-Style-Chassis.html
Boards - http://www.agbamplifiers.com/
Pots, switches, impedance selector, tube sockets, solder lugs and terminal strips, electrolytic filter caps and orange drops - https://www.cedist.com
Resistors, ceramic, tantalum and mica caps, IEC inlet, relays, regulator, diodes, electrolytic bypass, bias, and relay supply caps, Piher trimmers, bias test jacks, panel LED, fuse holder, 5-pin din - https://www.mouser.com
Hardware - http://www.mcmaster.com/
Relay Transformer - http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... kw=2103732
PT/OT/Choke - Mercury Magnetics, Magnetic Components, Heyboer, etc... (choose your poison)
Wire - http://www.apexjr.com/

Yeah, it is a multi-vendor expedition.

Be sure to order multiples of components (except transformers of course :D)

Study the schematic and layouts, research everything about it.

Many threads here of scratch builds.

Also consider either building a Dumbleator or a internal tube buffered FX loop in the chassis.
If you like to add a bit of reverb or delay, the loop can work very well.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

Hardly worth the effort Tom (of bothering to provide a detailed response, I mean)

Thanks Tom! I will read everything yes.
As for transformers, I have looked into the MM line and the Classictone line and I can't find any Dumble references there... Do you actually need to buy Fender Blackface Bassman or Blackface Twin transformers? Or is there any recommendation?

Several excellent documented Dumble topology examples in the files section........ pick one, research it, then stare and compare!

For a 50w build I used a Ceriatone OTS chassis with Classictone JTM45 PT, OT and choke set. No drilling required.

I don't think I have been disrespectful of anyone thus far... Unless you consider that not answering your advice of giving my location is a case of bad manners and disrespect. But if that can help, I'm in the EU.

It seems that the Bassman PT and OT are the most common choices for the 50w ODS replica.

I was the first person to give you advice which was a bit more than saying state your location, and you couldn't be bothered to say thanks, that is bad manners and disrespecful.
No worries I will delete it - enjoy your kit building in the EU.
