Giving away info you are entrusted to keep.
Over the years, there has been an inner circle of TAG members, who shared secrets that the rest of us were never privy to. Those entrusted with the info would have been kicked out of the club if they ever shared it.
Fortunately, some of the inner circle over the years got tired of the secrecy and realized if they gave the info to a third party, no one would know where the info came from.
I've been that third party on occasion.
I have never and will never reveal any sources for info shared with me.
You must first be sure the information has been shared with multiple parties, so you can not be blamed for the leak.
I assure you that all info I learn will be shared on TAG. I've been an advocate of Open Source software since the eighties, and without OSS, there would be no Internet, Amazon, or Google.
Information wants to be free. Science exists only in the free sharing of ideas. No civilized progress ever occurred from secrecy.
Should you have info you can't share because of some sworn secrecy, as long as you know multiple people have the info, you can share it though me without being exposed.
You see, to me, info-hoarders are the antithesis of TAG. It's like some Indian Caste system where we're either Brahmans or Untouchables. It's equivalent to the guys who figured out eclipses and used the info to enslave masses in a made up religion that glorified themselves.
Freely share information, for a better world, for a better society, for a better TAG.

I come here to learn, I owe it to give what I learn to others.
Bunch of people on here are way smarter than me and contribute so much. I'd list them but get pissed off at missing one.
My vote for the most knowledgeable, and most helpful on TAG would be MM. And you regulars know who I am talking about.

That's some manifesto! When is the revolution? It would be nice to see some of this information passed on. A lot of good knowledge here has been literally taken to the grave.
Re: Giving away info you are entrusted to keep.
To compare and contrast, on another forum they are discussing the Friedman Marsha and have speculated "why" on a few design points. Dave Friedman basically stepped in and said "why don't you just ask....". Totally cool and speaks volumes of the man who is openly sharing his design thoughts. Win for Dave.matt h wrote:It really comes down to money. There's talk about the secrets of the commercial builders needing to be secret to protect their livelihoods--uh, funny thing is that the people of this said inner circle--aren't they mostly people who build clones for money? I'm including the "original" commercial builders, who are mostly just cloning other (mostly dead, retired, and reclusive) people.
Hypocrisy? Self-interest? Riiiiight--those are the most noble ideals. I'm a fan of open source, but I'm a bigger fan of community investment. They're often aligned and more often mistaken for the same thing.

This is where I'm at. However, I believe in the *community* part of that. I hate seeing people who join forums only to get information, then leave, never to contribute anything back. I may not have much in the way of technical knowledge, but I at least try to be social with the folks who share so much information without asking for anything in return.matt h wrote:...but I'm a bigger fan of community investment...
Re: Giving away info you are entrusted to keep.
And that's the rub - when contributing members put out everything they have learned, only to have some greed-driven monkey come in from nowhere, just looking to copy someone else's WORK to make a quick buck for the "family" company.johnnyreece wrote:I hate seeing people who join forums only to get information, then leave, never to contribute anything back.
In the sense of free information, the latest one to do the drive-by grab-and-go was RockingClassElectronics.
Re: Giving away info you are entrusted to keep.
This is a tough one. I was once "pounced on" around here for keeping my word by keeping info private (I had accepted the info with a condition not to share). I learned that, if I can't share something, I should just keep my mouth shut and not let on to that fact. If you accept something on a condition to keep it private, I view this as an honor/credibility issue. In my opinion, you should keep your word and not share it. You should work out sharing rights at the time that you accept the information.
All of that being said, I share as much as I can around here because I have benefited from others' sharing. The whole drive-by and take info to profit situation does bother me though.
