Rocket Recto

Post by lpd »

I have taken ownership of an Fowler constructed RJ rocket and so far am very pleased with this amp. Going to roll some tubes to voice it to taste, but have a rectifier/technical question regarding it.

I substituted a 5U4 rectifier in the ps as it used a higher voltage pt 290-0-290 and I wanted to sag voltages down a notch. With the 5U4 it sounds amazing. Nice textured cleans and as I turn the volume up it just livens up nicely. I'm curious if I can try a 5R4 in there or would I affect output tube bias ect?

The Rocket is cathode biased, so no trouble when you lower the overall voltage by substituting a different rectifier tube.

Perfect. Looks like I can experiment a little. Any suggestions on speakers? I tried it on an ev15 but abit bassy to say the least.

The Rocket is built bassy. Don't be afraid to turn the Bass control way down. With this in mind, I have not tried a cab or speaker that sounded less than awesome.

Damn it is bassy. I've got the knob at 8:00 right now. Although I'm sure a ported 15 doesn't help matters either.

I normally run Celestion Vintage 30 or WGS Retro 30 or WGS Veteran 30 and even Mojotone copy because they are brighter speakers and really let the Rocket come through nicely. :)

It might have been RJ himself who called Rockets fat bottom girls.
Good analogy.
I likes a green & a blue in a 2 x 12 (semi) open back cab.
Great amps & you got one made by the Rocket Man himself.
Good Score.

Yeah it's a great amp. I prefer a 5U4 in her with the higher voltage pt as it warms it up a little and becomes abit more dimensional in tone. Still tube rolling as well to fine tune to taste but the amp at 10:00 I get very clean warm punchy character at 2:00 it grits up nicely and full out I get decent distortion but a pedal would push it just right.

Thoughts on a single scumback 30 watt alnico driver with the amp or am I pushing my luck with the speaker rating?
