Looking for a marshall 2210 #36 slash mod

Post by dariez75 »

Hy guys,
I've recently bought on ebay a marshall JCM 800 2210, the amp sounds great but I want tho achieve the #36 mod for a more gain. I don't know what kinda mod is that and I'm looking for a layout and7or schematic. Are there someone who knows it?

Seriously? The amp sounds great yet you want to destroy it with a mod that is based on a totally different amp topology? Buy/build a booster pedal--you will have all the gain you could ever want.
What?

The amp was made in 1987 is in very good conditions but when I compared its sound with other jcm 800 for example, 2203 sounds very different. I'got a JTM45 made by myself and sound terrific amazing compare to 2210. Even if I put my Fulltone OCD in front of JTM45 this one sounds better than 2210... I read in some topics about this kinda mod and, I know JCM 800 2210 has very different schematic compare to 2203 or the 1959 mod #36 mod used in AFD recording but I looking for that sound...

The #36 layouts are posted on metro amp forum which I could not find today

These are just something to refer to not to build with paint by numbers.

The schematic is not mated to the layout.

Thanks Fowler, amazing information. It looks like the amp tech added just a triode (half 12ax7) after V1.
Not easy to do in 2210 maybe I should try to create a new build amp based 2203/2204 and ad a half 12ax7...
Do you agree?

There are other variations so when Metro Amp Forum comes back on line I suggest you go over there and see the thread Marshall 100w about 400 or more pages loaded with SIR #34, 35, & 36.

To answer your question, yes I would start with a new chassis and expand from there.

I built #39 AFD which was posted here by Stephan known as Darkbluemurder and that is a four gain stage fire breather. I used blank www.turretboards.com chassis but my latest amp is using valve storm chassis that has blank front panel area (drill your own faceplate holes) but the rest of the chassis is punched and they can provide back panel.

Hi dariez75

I agree entirely, if ever there was a Marshall that worth the chop it is the 2210 and the 2205. I had to fix one and they just don't hold a candle to a 2204 or 2203. Though I guess some like the diode clipping in these amps.

It is a pity no one has come up with a good mod for these amps.

Here is a diagram of the IC. As you can see the emitters are tied to ground for four of the five transistors. The transistor pack operates by shunting signal to ground. Pin 5 shunts VR5, pin 8 shunts VR1 and pin 14 shunts VR5. Obviously pin 8 cannot be conducting when a clean tone is required, and pins 8 and 14 will have to shunt the distorted signal to ground.

The diode clippers are after the gain control they are labelled W005, the volume control is after the clippers.
Yours Sincerely

The Naylor amp is a refined version of an 800 and worth looking into for a mod version of your 2210 amp. I'm thinking about building a version of it. There are YouTube videos of that amp worth checking out.

I couldn't agree more. That's why I gutted mine and built a turret board version of the 2550 silver jubilee. The transformers are the same and the controls mostly match.

And, you are left with two tube sockets and the clean channel controls free!
