My strap button keeps coming loose. The wood is good; it's not stripped. I can tighten it down firmly, but after a couple of hours of playing, it's loose again.
Recommend something for the threads of the screw that will keep it in place, but not make it impossible to remove if I ever want to change strap buttons?

I agree, toothpick trick. Break about 3/8" from both points. Stuff 'em in hole. Affix strap button screw. Viola'.
Re: Need solution for strap button screw
If you don't like the toothpick trick, then use 5 minute binary epoxy in the hole and then screw the button in. I don't need to tell you to be careful with the epoxy going anywhere but in the hole.

OK, will toothpick. I've done that plenty when holes are stripped; didn't occur to me to try on a good hole.

If the screw is backing out, the hole isn't tight enough. The toothpick trick will fill the void. Then the screw will compress the toothpick pieces as it's cranked it, making the junction of screw to body-wood tighter.xtian wrote:OK, will toothpick. Re: Need solution for strap button screw
How deep are the threads on the screw? Probably not much. Most strap buttons come with crapola screws. I've had to use deep thread deck type screws in some cases, and even field-dress them with a file or grinder to get the head to fit. If the hole is already shredded, full of old matchsticks, toothpicks, dust & glue bits etc, might have to pick a different spot and sink that prime new deep-thread screw into sound wood. If you insist on using the same spot with a shredded socket, you really ought to carefully drill then fill that drilling with a good piece of glued-in dowel. cbass's suggestion of a dab of pine or fir rosin on the screw threads will help keep it from backing out. It'll smell good too.
