Replacing Capacitor Can with different values
I have an old can style capacitor from a 70s Peavey tube amp, and its 500V and 40/40/20/20 µF, would it be problematic to replace it with a 40/20/20/20 µF 500V (http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/C-EC40-20X3-500)
Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the help!

I can say no, but which amp do you have?
Re: Replacing Capacitor Can with different values
Contact Peavey and see if they have a replacement. I've seen people post in one forum or another about positive experiences on service matters.

I've seen the 40/40/20/20, I'll do some digging and see if I can find it again.

Re: Replacing Capacitor Can with different values
Leave the old can where it is.
Cut the wires going to it and fit individual 47uF 47uF 22uF and 22uF caps under the chassis.
Very rarely will there not be space to do this and often you can shorten supply runs by putting the caps right where they are used.
Cheers,
Ian

Not to mention that you can also put the grounds where they are supposed to go.gingertube wrote:Leave the old can where it is.

Re: Replacing Capacitor Can with different values
Agreed with Ginger and Fire, I often will just leave the can cap in place (for cosmetic appearances, it's removed from the circuit) and try to work in the power supply electrolytics and power resistors where they will fit. I did this on an Ampeg Mercury recently (same era as the R-12R) and it came out cleaner than the factory wiring, which was sort of all over the place as far as how they were getting connectivity to everything. I simplified some stupid wire runs they made at the factory and redid the grounds to hush things up a bit.
