So that is normal?
Depressing really.....
Can you imagine how many people would complain if an amp had the knobs 3/8" off of the panel?

I am not going to chop the shafts.

Re: Gibson Knobs SOLVED
Hey Tom, when I swapped my speed knobs for top hats on my '96 Studio, I had an issue with them being high as well. I REALLY had to push down hard, but I was able to get them to nudge down a bit more, like the pics Miles posted. They still ride high though..

They have at least 1/32nd clearance to the pointer tip and the old pointers are taller a teeny.

Re: Gibson Knobs SOLVED
Those guitars with the knobs sitting up high are just a little more excited than the others...

Depends on if the strap comes off when you spin it.

Re: Gibson Knobs SOLVED
So today I did the dirty deed.
I chucked up a huge drill in my drill press.
I taped up the inside of the knob to avoid damage.
Well I was also risking the health of my hands because I had to hold the knob while I drilled it down.
DANGEROUS!
But I was lucky and only got a nick or two when something went bad.
So far so good.
Pictures soon.

Sorry, I may be too late with this idea. Fashion a jig to hold the knob whilst drilling ...... bore out a block of wood a bit larger, but following the contours (top hat figure) of the knob. Acquire an anti-skid pad at the auto-store (or wherever). Wrap the anti-skid pad around the knob and stuff it down into the hollowed jig (that's why you make it a bit larger than the size of the knob). Then clamp the whole deal onto the drill press, carefully measure the depth, tape off the drill bit to mark the spot do you don't go too deep and proceed slow, slow, slow. That's the rough idea anyway.
Re: Gibson Knobs SOLVED
Well my solution worked.
I drilled the center insert so it was below the skirt of the knob.
It wasn't easy and I have the wounds to prove it.
Nah, not that bad but I would recommend to anybody that wants to change out their guitar knobs to do some research before ordering the knobs.
I had no idea that there would be such diversity between knobs, especially when they were Gibson Pure knobs.
Anyway here it is.
